Lexie was fluffed, waxed and primped to perfection.
“Do you know what event this is for tonight?” She asked to anyone who would listen to her.
One man who was working on her eye makeup looked at her in astonishment. “Why, it’s for you! The first official outing of the prime minister’s wife!”
Knots suddenly formed in Lexie’s stomach. What had she signed up for exactly? She furrowed her eyebrows that received a tsk from one of the stylists before they tried to smooth out the wrinkle.
“Sorry.”
Someone else brought in the dress she would be wearing tonight. She couldn’t see it from where she was sitting, but the other stylists were cooing and aweing over it.
She didn’t feel excited as everyone in the room seemed to be. Maybe this was a bigger deal then she thought it would be. Dread formed in her stomach but Lexie refused to feel anything. She stood up to clear her thoughts and walked over to the crowd of people holding the dress.
“Can I see it?” The circle divided down the middle and a hush fell over the room. It felt like the whole room was holding its breath as they waited for her approval.
Lexie reached out her arms to clasp her hands on the silky red material. It was a lively red strapless gown. To call it a dress would have been an insult. “It’s beautiful.” She said breathlessly.
With the help of a few stylists, she slipped into the gown and hands started to fly. Adjustments were made, hair was tucked, and makeup was given the final touch. It was to her advantage that she had a dancer’s body since the gown was form fitting and only flowed from the knee down. It was a mermaid dress and fit like a glove. She secretly knew Anton had been the man to pick this out for her.
A diamond choker necklace was linked around her neck and since she didn’t have her ears pierced, Lexie went without earrings. She was strapped into some wedges and finally was told that she looked perfect.
By this point, Lexie could already hear the guests starting to arrive. The sounds of their footsteps and distant music echoed through the hall and into the room she was in. Her hands became moist and Lexie took a deep breath to try to calm herself.
“When do I make my entrance?” She spoke to anyone who cared to listen.
“We can go ahead and start making our way over.” This stylist had overseen all the work that had been done to Lexie and was clearly in charge.
“Lea, I’m Debbie, you’re main stylist and overseer of pretty much everything.” She chuckled for a moment. “As we walk, I’ll just fill you in on things you should know before walking into that ballroom because once you’re in there, you’re on your own.”
The new name threw her off. Gone was Lexie and in came Lea. Straightening her shoulders, Lea became the part of the prime minister’s wife and began to follow Debbie out of the room.
“Make sure you always pose and smile for the cameras. Prime Minister Rockwell has allowed the social media to take pictures at your grand entrance. You have a dancer’s physique, which is to your advantage since it gives you a delicate look. Smile with your teeth and never forget to look the cameras in the eyes, or the lens in this matter. And don’t forget to show off the ring. The media will go crazy over it.”
“What ring?” Lea’s mind was spinning but she kept her wits about her.
“It’s waiting for you just before the door you’ll be entering through. Your wedding ring. Media love to connect how much the prime minister loves you by how much he is willing to spend on your ring. Trust me,” she said, looking over, “you won’t be disappointed.”
