Chapter 7.
"Are you sure you should be out ?"
"Ya , just the aftermath of little sleep and the high of caffeine "
Laila and I are outside, in her backyard . She looked high and sick , but she wouldn't go to bed .
"Don't you got any friends huh Andrew ?"
"Well damn, yes I do. Do you got any , other than me?" I smiled and winked at her .... Did I wink at her ?
"Duh. You don't go out much "
"True that. Between you and me , society doesn't like me"
"Of course , I don't like society."
she smiles up to me and makes eye contact . Lighting up a cigarette. I notice finally today , in the this dim afternoon light . Her eyes are the color of honey . Her lips are not too full, they're not thin . They're perfectly shaped , her lilac lipstick makes them stand out .
"Do you always wear the same shade of lipstick ?"
"Huh? Almost no one notices , no. Sometimes it's more pink. Sometimes it's more purplely , if that makes sense , hey, I made a new word! "
she laughs and I smile like a dumbass. Her waves curled at the very tips , her hair is a light brown . She's wearing a long skirt , sheer from her knees down.
A plain white tee
A floral headband
A cigarette between her lips .
She's playing something that sounds like Coldplay . She leans in my shoulder , offering me a cigarette .
"Are you into them? "
She whispers , waving her iPod.
"Yes"
"Mm ok ."
She smiles a little and looks down at her bracelets . All different colors, all different sizes .
"I was lost , I was lost, crossed lines I shouldn't have crossed, I was lost oh yea..."
She sings along , her smile fades.
"I use to listen to this a lot back in high school . We moved so much with my family . Once I started adapting , we would move again. It doesn't even fit right with me, but the lyrics always seemed right."
Her expression is well , lonely.
" I started photography when I was a sophomore . I realized because I moved so much , I always had new views , now I'm stuck with nature pictures , country , farms , cities . I tried to see the positive side of the situations."
I reach for her hand . She smiles .
"Friends where a problem. We didn't really settle any where for a long time until my senior year. Because my grandmother came in the situation , said I deserved to have one year of 'normality ' attend to clubs , maybe do a sport . Go to prom . Little shit like that . Of course , none of it bothered me much . Except ... Prom ."
"Huh, prom? Why?"
She looks up to me , her eyes widened a little . Her cheeks going red .
" I was awkward Andrew , well to be honest I still are . I didn't go to prom with any guy . My Friend Annie took pity on me and we went together , we hanged together , stood by the corner and laughed at girls so wore the 5 inch heels and all they did was complain . It was nice , but I didn't really get the high school sweetheart thing . I haven't been in a relationship since my junior year ."
Oh
"That's a shocker ."
"Are you being sarcastic ?"
"No ! No, just, honest."
I pray. don't make a fool out yourself Andrew.
"How is it a shocker though ?"
"Well your not ugly "
"But I'm not pretty"
"Sure lets go wit... Wait no , I mean you're pretty but a little more."
I look at her , she's giggling .
"Something funny Laila ?"
"You, are you always so weird ?" I want to answer , but I hear thunder .
"The hell?" It rains . Laila and I get up so fast, I just feel the rain pouring down so fast, so hard . I slip or she does first , our bodies hit and then we're on the floor . Soaking wet and I'm on top of her .
"Go on a diet dude."
"Sorry sorry" I help her up , and she sticks her tongue at me . She walks to her kitchen door , she signs me to go inside . Her white tee is sticking to her small figure . Her skirt dripping water and she's putting her hair in some weird bun.
Her eyes shine even more in the kitchen light .
More lighting , more thunder . We make eye contact . She smiles at me .
"Want some ..."
The lights go off .
"Andrew ?"
"Still infront of you."
She reaches for me , small fingers finding my arms .
Closer
Fingers entwined
"Your hands are warm Andrew"
She whispers softly
My hand finds its way up to her cheek. She's cold .
I didn't realize how tall I am next to her .
I back her up to the wall .
My heart is beating fast , so fast .
My lips find her forehead , her fingers lacing behind my neck .
My lips are on her nose.
My lips find hers,
slightly parted ,
warm, soft
I don't want to lose control .
"Kiss me again Andrew"
Tabbaco and candy flavored kisses.
My hands in her waist .
I feel her smile against my lips, I kiss her a bit harder .
I almost forgot to breathe .
