As I touched the jewel in the middle of the tab, and my surroundings shifted.
"Emberlyn! Time for school!" My father called.
I picked up my little sister, Lily, who smiled.
"Hi!" She said cheerfully. "I love you sissy."
I kissed her forehead. "I love you too."
~
"Mia!" Lily cried."Go!" I yelled. "Lillian Morgenstern, if you don't leave right now and go get dad, I won't be back for you!"
Lily ran and I screamed as my captor snapped my arm.
"All Jews are supposed to die. You've gone undetected for long enough. You are filthy!"
The poison, the pain. That's all I remember.
Until it all stopped. They let me live.
"Since you've done well and served your country we'll let your heritage slide," the general hissed. "But you must continue to serve Germany. You are part of the Nazis. Now go."
Thank God they let me live.
~
"You're not even asking why I'm not crying?"I stood there, not bothering to answer.
"Because you're alive. You're alive and you sacrificed yourself for me. It's not your fault Mia."
I continued to stay silent.
We were finally out of Germany, away from its iron grasp.
If it were up to me, I'd kill Adolf Hitler myself.
"Emberlyn," Dad said. "Please talk."
My gaze travelled to a figure in the dark, aiming at my sister.
I shoved Lily out of the way as the man fired the gun and fell to the ground, blood instantly staining my shirt.
"Mia!" Lily cried.
I squeezed her hand. "I love you Lily. I promise that you'll be safe now. Don't forget that I will always be with you, in your heart, alive in your memory."
