After Neverseen

Chapter 14

Sophie saw the cages burst open and the prisoners inside freeze for a moment, making sure that it wasn't a trap. They watched as Silveny and Celeste took a tentative step out the door. Nothing happened, and then all the prisoners ran out of their cages. Most fled down the hall but somes stayed to fight. Sophie saw Silveny sniff the air and start down the hall, Come Silveny's voice echoed through her mind and Sophie transmitted for them all to follow Silveny. She felt bad abandoning the escaped prisoners, but Silveny and her baby were more important. 

Ruy and the other Neverseen were too busy battling the escaped prisoners to notice them. Silveny ran down the hall and they passed an open doorway. Sophie peered in, complicated formulas were sketched onto the wall and a small mirror laid on a table. A strange glowing light coming from the ceiling lit the room. 

Sophie tenatively walked inside the room looking around, momentarily forgetting about Silveny and her friends. Sophie looked into the mirror, it dully reflected the light from the ceiling emitting a small glow. Sophie stumbled back, a piercing headache roaring through her brain. She tripped over a table and smacked her head on something hard, she heard a distant scream and then everything went black.

Sophie woke up. Groaning, she stood up and took in her surroundings. She was in an old building in the Forbidden Cities. It was made from old stone and bricks, it had high vaulted ceilings. Vines covered the giant detailed window beside her, and moss grew on the floor. Sophie heard muffled yelping and looked behind her, Fitz and Tam were being held captive in a familiar looking shield. Fitz's face was tristed in pain as he slammed his fist against it in a fruitless effort to get out. Whipping around, Sophie saw the rest of her friends being held captive in the same type of shield in front of her. Silveny whinnied nervously. 

Sophie looked at the five cloaked Neverseen agents in the shadows, she knew that four of the cloaked agents were Ruy, Brantan, Fintan, and Alvar-but she wasn't sure who the fifth agent was since their hood covered their face. "What do you want?" Sophie asked, she was getting tired of their games. She was ready to take a stand. "Nothing at all," Fintan stepped closer, but Sophie held her ground "We just need you and your friends to stop interfering with our plans." "Never," Tam growled, "We'll never stop" the fifth Neverseen agent moved towards him, but Fintan held up a finger to stop them. 

"I think you'll find many friends with us," Fintan said, smiling, but the smile never reached his cold blue eyes. "I don't need any more friends," Sophie said "Fine," Fintan smile disappeared and he narrowed his eyes, "But we can give you what you truly desire. A world where you don't have to worry about the Council breathing down your neck. A world where everyone loves Sophie Foster, the Moonlark. A world where you'll never have too worry about being exiled again." Fintan's smile reappeared, "Join us, Sophie Foster." 

Sophie narrowed her eyes, noticing that the fifth Neverseen agent reach towards their hood. Slowly, the agent drew the hood back. Counciller Alina's smiling face was underneath. Sophie took a step back in shock and saw her friends gasp. "No," Sophie murmured, but deep down, she knew it was true. Fintan smiled, "Funny, isn't it? How a little heartbreak can go a long way. It wasn't that hard to keep tabs on you Sophie, since you saw Alina practically every day. And the circlet was ingenious Dex," Fintan turned and smiled at Dex "You have such talent. It was a simple matter for Alina to convince the Council to use the circlet. And to think that they were going to make you scoop poop at the Sanctuary!" Fintan scoffed and Sophie glared. She had had enough of people trying to hurt her friends. 

Sophie thrust out her hand and pushed out the ball of energy she had been holding. The brain push threw back Ruy and his head he slammed into the wall behind him. Sophie heard a crack and Ruy didn't get back up. Now that her friends were freed, they gathered behind Sophie, ready to fight. Wylie and Alvar had some kind of weird stare off thing and Biana and Fitz refused to look at him. 

Sophie saw Linh gathering water from the cracks in the ceiling and Tam forming a shavowvapor thing. "Fine, so you want to do this the hard way," Fintan's eyes narrowed and white flames leapt to his hands and Sophie saw Brant's do the same.  Narrowing her eyes, Sophie thrust out a hand, trying to do another brain push. But she didn't have enough energy. Fitz! I need help! Sophie transmitted I'm here, his thick accented voice filled her mind

Sophie transmitted to Dex to cover her and Fitz while she explained her plan. Nodding to Fitz, Sophie ran towards the Neverseen, startled, they faltered a step and Sophie transmitted to Fitz, Everblaze

Sophie and Fitz's minds melded and they gathered a ball of energy, more powerful than anything that they had ever felt before. Unnerved, Sophie lost concentration for a split second when Fintain screamed something about killing people and then the energy released, spiraling towards the ceiling. "RUN!" Sophie screamed and grabbed her friends, moving them as far away as she could. The entire ceiling came down on top of the Neverseen.

Chunks of cream colored rock came down with an earth shattering BOOM! Dust flew in the air and for a moment Sophie couldn't see anything. Coughing, her throat closed up when she breathed in the dust. Sophie felt the trembles coming from the floor,  and then the ground fell down.

The ground fell onto the chamber that Sophie and her friends had just escaped from. The floor that they were riding crumbled and Sophie saw a piece of the cieling come down. Sophie looked away right before it landed and she heard a loud crash along with a snapping sound. A strange feeling came over her leg. I will not look. I WILL not look. I WILL NOT LOOK! Sophie forced herself to not look at her leg as she hobbled to her feet. Ruy and three of the other Neverseen agents were struggling to get up, but Fintan lay still. 

Ruy turned around and saw his master lying in the floor. Frowning, he leaned over him and put a hand on Fintan's sweaty, pale forehead before he retracted it quickly. "He's dead," he said quietly. There was utter silence in the room as everyone took in the fact that the leader of the Neverseen was dead. Brant roared "YOU KILLED HIM AND YOU ARE GOING TO PAY!!!" Before charging, his whole body covered in Everblaze, right towards Sophie.

Sophie told herself that she should move, she HAD to. But her body just stayed where it was, her brain too shocked that Fintan had been killed, by her. Maybe-maybe I deserve to die Sophie thought, slowly she started to shake in an unexplainable emotion. She had KILLED someone. Brant moved closer and Sophie could smell the sweet sugar smell of the Everblaze. She closed her eyes and awaited death. But before Brant could reach her, someone yanked her out of the way and Sophie's eyes flew wide open. It was Keefe, Keefe who had saved her. Keefe was the only one who had felt what she had and done something about it. 

Breaking into a sob, Sophie ran to Keefe and hugged him. He hugged her back before gently pushing her away. "It wasn't your fault Foster, it was an accident," he whispered, looking into her eyes. Sophie nodded. She didn't believe him, but it was enough for her to turn around and keep on fighting.
