BECKETT
He was taller, leaner. His long black hair was usually tied in a bun but he now opted for a short cropped look. He kept throwing me a sideways glance as we walked down the hallway, taking in my entire frame.
"What?" I asked.
"Nothing. It's just...just nice to see you on your feet again," Noah said. His blue eyes sparkled. "I really missed you, Beck."
"I know," I said.
He let out a whistle. "Nice to know you're still cocky." I smiled.
"Some things never change." Noah smiled back. "You better get ready. Sasha is going to freak when she sees you."
We turned a corner and I immediately came to face a pair of widened green eyes.
"And I thought the rumors were a lie," Sasha said. She looked the same. Long blonde hair pulled into a ponytail. Bangs nearly covering her eyes. She had on a cream colored leather jacket with a white t-shirt, ripped blue jeans, and black boots with slight heels. She was slightly taller than me. She gave me a playful push, then pulled me in for a hug. "I thought I'd never see this bitch again."
"Sasha, language," I heard someone say to the right. I turned to see a tall, built, African-American guy. He had a horrified look on his face.
"Chill, babe. I've called her worse." Sasha's lips quirked to the side.
"True," Noah said. "Sasha and Beck didn't used to get along in the past. So, there was always a string of unholy cuss words from Sasha's side and a whole lot of fists from Beck's side. It was like a match made in hell."
"Hi, I'm Al-"
"This is Lulu," Noah cut off the boy.
'Lulu' rolled his eyes and pushed Noah to the side. "I'm Alula," he said, offering me his hand. "You can call me Al." I shook his hand.
"Lulu," Noah interjected. "Call him Lulu. It drives him crazy."
"Jackass," Al said.
"This right here," Sasha said, pushing Noah aside and wrapping her hands around Al's waist, "is my arm candy."
Al shook his head. "I'm not her arm candy."
"He's my arm candy," Sasha said again, smiling.
"Why do I even try?" Al said.
"Wow, Sasha," I said. "He is totally out of your league."
"Bitch," Sasha said, eyes narrowed, but a playful smile on her lips.
"Huh. You know what? I think I like you, Beckett. I heard a lot about you but now that I'm meeting you in person, I think I like you more." Al smiled, showing dimples.
"He's mine," Sasha said, clutching him closely. I laughed.
"You can have him. I'm not interested."
"Of course," Sasha said, "You only ever had eyes for Luke."
The room stilled and I felt like someone had punched me in the gut. Noah glared at Sasha.
"Um, I'm going to go to the vending machine and grab a drink," Al said, sensing the air shift in the room.
I balled my hands into fists, feeling my nails dig into the skin of my palm. My ears felt muffled. Sasha was saying something but I couldn't hear. I wasn't in the room with them anymore. I was suddenly back there. I was lying on the gravel, rain pouring hard over me. I felt pain shoot up my spine and the pain was enough to bring me back. Sasha was holding my hand, shaking me lightly.
"Beck. Beckett, I'm sorry. I'm such a bitch. I'm so so sorry."
I felt beads of sweat forming on my brow, on the back of my neck, on my hands. My hands were shaking. I jerked my hand from Sasha's grip.
"I have to get back to class," I said, trying to keep my voice from trembling. Without looking back, I walked away. Noah and Sasha's calls behind me went unheard. I didn't want to listen. I had to leave.
Walking down the hall, I felt the realization hit me hard. It had been two years. Two years but it was still the same. One word, seeing something familiar - it was enough to trigger the memories. And every time I felt like I couldn't breathe. Like I was going to die.
It was never going to stop. It was never going to stop hurting. It didn't matter which direction I ran in. My past would always come back to haunt me.
I finally realized it. I could never run away.
