BECKETT
"Alex," I said, looking up the starlit sky.
We sat in the park a few feet from my house. My palms were pressed against the dewy grass as I leaned back on my hands. Jeremy was next to me, lost in his thoughts.
I wasn't looking, but I could now feel his eyes on me.
He had insisted on walking me home while I persisted saying that I was very much capable to walk home alone. He didn't seem in that great of a mood so I gave up pretty quickly.
"Why do you think that?" he said, his voice edgy.
"The pouting. The annoying mumbling to oneself. The random flares of anger," I counted down on my fingers.
"And?" he asked, irritated.
"The common symptoms of heartbreak."
"So, you're lumping all girls into one big, general category?"
I turned to him and narrowed my eyes. "Why do I feel like I've said something I'll regret?"
"All girls, meaning it includes you. How many hearts have you broken?"
"None."
"None?" he asked, suspiciously.
"None."
"Not even one?"
"Nope."
"Well, except mine," he pouted.
"Wow. First of all, two things: first, I thought players didn't have a heart-"
"Ouch," he feigned hurt.
I laughed.
"-shut up and let me finish. And two, I don't care about hurting people I don't care about."
"Wow. So, ruthless," Jeremy laughed. "Now?"
"What?"
"What about now? Would you care if you hurt me now? If right now, I declared my undying love for you, would it be so easy for you to just reject me?"
He angled his body towards me and crossed his arms. His eyes held a glint of curiosity as well as seriousness.
"Depends."
"On?" he raised a brow.
"Do you love me?"
He laughed and shook his head.
"Didn't think so," I said, punching him lightly on the arm.
"That's besides the point."
"I think it very much has to do with the point."
"How so?"
"Forget love. If you even had the tiniest bit of feelings for me - given that I didn't like you back - I'd reject you right away."
"What? Why?" he said, dropping his crossed arms and leaning closer. "I thought we were friends."
"We are."
"So, you admit to caring for me?"
"I do."
"Wow," he said, running a hand through his hair. "You're really blunt. You know that? If it were any other guy, he would've fallen for you right now."
