Jay always knew Nathan liked him. The Gloucester boy never did much to actually hide this fact. Jay always tried to ignore it because for him, it was for the best. He did the oblivious act of a best friend that has absolutely no idea of his friend's feelings.

He always been there for Nathan even though he knew Nathan's feelings for him. He grew up with Nathan therefore he can't abandon him. Never. That is why he had a breakdown when Nathan told him he had cancer. A week after that Jay decided to make Nathan's life the best ever and if he ever died, he wants Nathan to have a smile on his face. Jay decided that he would ask Nathan to be his boyfriend even though he didn't return the feelings. Nathan always came first.

Nathan could see in Jay's eyes that the curly boy didn't exaclty love him. When Nathan slipped an 'I Love You' one month into their "relationship" he was glad Jay said it back but he knew the way he meant it wasn't as profund as Nathan's.

Nathan ignored it because he loved Jay and he wouldn't have this "relationship" if he had an assurance that he would live. He could die any day, why can't he have something he always wanted for his whole life? He deserved this, and he just wanted to enjoy it while he can.

"I love you Jay" Nathan said after coming home from dinner at a fancy retaurant that Nathan always wanted to go. Jay decided to take Nathan to the place to take his mind off that he just started the treatments for cancer.

Nathan was thanking Jay for the amazing night they had and after the sweet kiss Jay gave him those words slipped. Jay was expecting it to come soon anyways so he didn't freak out and simply said it back.

He accepted anyway because that is better than no love at all. He didn't want the only smile he could get to go away. He can accept that and he will.
