chapter five: crash
we don't talk about planes flying; we talk about them crashing.
agent johnson blasts down the doors of the home, and i walk in behind banks, my gun raised.
we were working with S.H.I.E.L.D. to find the monster inhuman, and we picked up intel on a man helping the inhuman find them.
i search part of the house, quietly stepping around. hearing a crash, i sprint to where the noise was located.
walking in behind banks, i look around the room.
"mr. frye, come out and say 'hello'", agent mackenzie says, dragging the struggling man out into the room.
"how hard did you hit him?", coulson asks.
"not that hard."
i watch from the corner of the room, swallowing hard.
"-but i don't think he's our guy."
"she's killing me.. get her out of here." the guy struggles to say, scooting to the wall, away from everybody.
"he's having some kind of reaction to our special friend here.", banks says, looking at johnson.
rosalind glances back at me, and i shrug.
"if we want answers, might help if she's not here," rosalind says.
the agent glances at rosalind.
"just a thought. denvers, you go too."
coulson nods at johnson, and i walk out of the room, ahead of the agent.
"who are you?", agent johnson asks, as i stand awkwardly.
"why?" i ask, crossing my arms. she sighs.
"you always seem to be in every situation with us, so it would be nice to know your name."
"oh, um... laura denvers." i say, a little more hesitant than it should've been.
one of their agents, mackenzie, walks out, and our conversation ends as they commerce.
hilarious, ronnie. it's almost like they're already suspicious, i think to myself, going back to my other agent.
✸ ✸ ✸
i stand inside of the truck, watching two of our agents help the 'inhuman tracking' inhuman on. taking a long look at my father, i turn away, looking around the back of the truck, even though there wasn't much to look at.
i tuck a strand of my loose, blonde hair back in my bun. we all stood at attention, waiting to get ready to leave.
and soon enough, two of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s agents, johnson and mackenzie, hop in the trunk, and we roll off.
it was quite an awkward ride, just them on the other side of me, and me sitting on the right of a guy who felt pain whenever he was near inhumans, and another agent on his left.
finally, agent johnson speaks:
"i feel like we're driving in circles.", she says, glancing at her friend.
"i bet we are," the other agent says, "probably buying time for mr. banks to clean up their facility."
i chuckle, a bit louder than i should.
"-didn't you see how fast he left the scene?"
"yeah," johnson says, "so he could get rid of anything roz doesn't want us to see."
"-that, or he's prepping a cell for you."
agent johnson scoffs. "it's his funeral," she says, and glances at me, "you again. why are you always somehow involved again?"
i close my eyes, sighing. "fate, maybe?", i say with a hint of a smirk.
the inhuman next to me starts to struggle more.
"i feel like his meds are wearing off.", agent johnson says.
we suddenly hear a thud, and a blue light circle appears on the roof, and the part of the roof disappears.
the monster we'd been looking for was right in front of us.
i was the first to get up.
"here we go" i mumble, getting knocked down to the corner.
my fellow agent soon falls on the other side.
as i clutch my head, i see mackenzie try and punch him, but he gets thrown...
and lands right on top of me.
i groan, curled up. "g-get... off of-"
the truck lands on it's side, and we get thrown again.
✸ ✸ ✸
when i wake up, all i see is a bright light shining above me.
"what the-" i try to say, but a figure stands in front of the light, saving me from my temporary blindness.
"agent denvers, so nice of you to wake," rosalind price says, smiling as she helps me sit up.
"ms. price, as much as i love how you've grown on me, i think you calling me that is a little much," i say, returning the smile.
"well, would you rather me shout out 'hey,'--"
"don't!" i yelp, my face flashing with fear.
rosalind chuckles a bit, then pats my back awkwardly. "you'll get to that point soon enough, kid."
i watch as she turns to exit, her face molding back to the rosalind that everyone else knew.
why do we have to be at a hospital? i think to myself, as i stand up slowly, and pull back the curtain.
and how am i still alive?
