Chapter 3: Isaac & Sweets.

-

The first thing I felt was something being shoved in my mouth. And it didn't taste pleasant. In fact, it was disgusting. I sat jolt right up, and sprayed the fowl tasting stuff all around me. It must of got the person who fed me it, because he cursed under his breathe.

I went to open my eyes, and I caught a glimpse of the boy leaving me. The room we were in was brick walked, and a gold cross with Jesus hung above the doorway.

I pushed myself to sit up. An overwhelming weight fell on my chest, and I dropped back onto my well cushioned bed.

I don't know how long I slept before I woke up again. As I opened my eyes, I realised I wasn't alone. A woman sat in the corner, her eyes trained on a small brown book in front of her. I knew what she was reading. The Holy Bible.

I slowly pulled up, resting myself on my elbows. My hole entire being shook. I'd never experience so much pain. I let out a low groan, placing my right hand on my cheek, feeling the extent of the damage.

My noise had caught the attention or the woman, and a smile broke across her face. As my eyes adjusted to the weak lighting, the woman's figure became clear.

He was thin, and she sat on a wooden seat. She had a young face, with tired eyes. She was dressed in black and white nunnery robes. Rosary-beads hung from her neck, where the white faded into black. I could just make out the little Jesus on the cross.

'Good morning.' She said. Her voice was soft, and quaint. It didn't sound like a rough New Yorkers, she sounded like my mothers.

'They brought you to the abbey, very smart boys.' The woman smiled at the thought of them. She leant down to her side, and picked up a white bag. The smell hit me before I could see the sweets. But they smelt amazing. I then realised how hungry I really was.

I sat up fully, my back ached. I think I had pulled every muscle in my body. I groaned as I tucked my legs together. I was only wearing my undershorts and white singlets, but I had no idea wear my pinafore was.

I glanced over to the nun. She handed me the bag of lollies. I took one and began to suck. They tasted even better than they smelt.

'His name was Isaac.' She smiled. 'They boy who carried you.' I knew who he was. He was a big black guy. I thought he'd break me in half before he dragged me to safety.

'There was another boy.' She said. 'His name is Sweets. He gave me this bag, for you.' Like remembered who he was. A small boy, probably nine or ten. He had black hair, and suspenders. And a bag of lollies.

'Whst was.. The stuff .. You fed me?' I asked. The nun began to laugh.

'I didn't feed you. Sweets did. And he fed you an old nun recipe. Wakes you up.' She smiled, she brought her hands to her knees as she stood. He robes fell down just above her shoes.

I nodded my head. I reached my hand up to my head. I felt around for my hair. I was so troubled, it wasn't here

'Uhh..' I could feel my heart racing, my cheeks splashed red.

'I plaited it up. It's out of the way, and it helps blood circulation in your head, that'll take the bruise away.' She smiled brightly at me. She turned to the door.

'Can I leave when ever?' I asked. She turned around and nodded. 'Your clothes are under your bed.' She smiled kindly at me. As she opened to turned to me.

'Safe travels Anastasia Picket.' She smiled. Her eyes glinted with mystery. How could she know my name?

'How did you know?' I asked. I felt the back of my head, my hair was restricted into right braids that were like a bun on the back of my head, except in braids.

She didn't say anything, and didn't need to. A paper lay on the foot of my bed. It had a big picture of me printed on it. I could feel my heart beat hard. She shut the door and left me in silence.

I crawled down the bed, my muscles screamed in pain, but I continued. I gripped the paper and began to read.

'Early yesterday morning, Banker George Picket and Louise Picket's daughter, Anastasia, was found missing from her home. She attended breakfast, but did not come when she was called by a servant. A maid searched the house, and found Mr Picket's hat was missing. The police are suspecting an abduction or a robbery gone wrong, because money was missing from the family fault. Also, they found that most of the house was in mess. Perhaps Anastaia put up a fight. During this abduction and robbery, the Maid was out grocery shopping. Police talked with Anastasia's mother afterwards. 'I just want my darling girl to be safe, and just tell her that I love her.' Mrs Picket said.

IF ANYONE HAS SEEN OR HEARD FROM ANASTASIA PICKET, PLEASE CONTACT POLICE IMMEDIATELY, SO JUSTICE CAN BE SERVED TO THE KIDNAPPERS.'

I flicked through the pages to see if they continued more in detail. I found nothing until I came across a small article named; 'NEWSIES DEATH'

'At 11 o'clock yesterday morning, a boy was hit by a carriage. The carriage was empty and the driver wasn't harmed, neither the horses. But sadly the boy, Oliver Wilton, died in the accident.'

I threw the paper across the room. How could they? How dare they?! They put me on the front cover, rather than Oliver! He deserves better! He deserves so much more. I sunk back down. I felt empty. So much injustice. I had to do this now. I couldn't run back to my mommy and daddy. I had to revolt for Oliver.

I leant down to my side, my green pinafore sat with a bunch of other clothing, some were boys. I took my chance to get my clothes. I finally got changed into my new clothes.

I was dressed in a stripy red shirt, with a black vest over the top. I had black socks with brown shoes. I fiddled around my bag for my dad's hat, and placed it on my head. There. Perfect. I took a deep breathe and rehearsed my boy voice.

'COME GET YA' PAPES' I called. Still girly. I'd have to come up with something better. I reached for the lollies and placed one in my mouth. I chewed it up. I headed for the door, but before I opened, I said to myself. 'Thank's Isaac and Sweets.'
