Chapter 7: The Locket Twins.

-

It took me another few days to get better, and back on my feet. Soon I was walking around, and selling papers. I'd gone back to being a boy, but the Newsies of Manhattan knew I was a girl. I sold papers with two boys. Richie and Mush. They were both tall, good looking boys. Mush had short brown hair, he was the handsomest of the two. Richie had big green eyes, and light mousy brown hair. They waltzed down the street, spinning around light poles, and kicking up the curb. I giggled as the did the dosey-doe around a woman, who clapped her hands and paid a nickle, just for the entertainment.

I tried my best to pretend to be blind, but hanging around with Mush and Richie was too much fun to ignore. I danced around with them for hours, singing to our hearts content. We swept down to the harbour, and moved along the pathways. People moved out of our way, some shook their head in disgust, some clapped and cheered us on. We moved on down to the fancier part of town, where I lived.

Streets overflowed with woman and children, florists and bakeries opened all over the place. And that's were I first saw the Locket Twins. Two gorgeous, identical, girls. Both with flowing, thick, black hair. They're features were both so delicate, like a rose. I bit my lip as we walked down the street. Mush and Richie were deep in conversation, fighting over this girl, who had the blondest hair in the whole world. I moved off the pavement to the road, selling a paper to a man with a big top hat. It matched the colour of his green pinstriped suit.

'Aye', Imma' go get myself something to eat.' Richie said, sticking his hands deep into his pockets, fishing around for some chained. Mush nodded in agreement. I stood outside the bakery, continuing to sell papers. And that's were I had my first meeting with the Locket twins.

'I'm Molly.' The girl on the right said.

'And I'm Holly.' The girl on the left said. They both leant on either side of me, closing me in. I pushed myself away, ignoring them.

'Aw, c'mon boy. You ignorin' us?' Holly continued, she swung her hair across her face and gushed. She'd managed to find herself a courset, and was pushing her breasts to show clevage. Molly did the same. One was in purple, the other in blue.

'Don't you wans' summa' dis?' Molly giggled, her small lips layered in red lipstick. I shook my head, trying to keep my composure. It wasn't holding up, luckily Mush and Richie returned.

'Aye! Skanks! Skram!' Mush began swatting the Locket twins, they all groaned in disgust, shifting on their toes.

'We'll come back - we loves us some fresh meat.' They giggled together. I exhaled deeply. I held my breath the whole entire time. Richie threw his arm over my shoulder, comforting me.

'Dun' worry about them.' He said, 'they awful gurls', and aren't worth a penny.' He confirmed.

Mush, Richie and I moved back up to the lodging house, were we found all the boys sitting in a circle, having a meeting. Mush and Richie both had arms around my neck, protecting me even though I was perfectly safe, and capable to fight off others.

'SHE'S DISTRACTING!' Clancy cried. 'I CANTS' SLEEP AT NIGHT!' He continued. He clearly knew I wasn't in the room. Jack's eyes glanced back over to me, giving off another blatant stare. I avoided all the eyes on me. I quickly pushed myself away from Mush and Richie, moving over to my bed. I sat down on it, and took off my hat. Davey lowered his voice before he continued.

'Look - we have to keep her.' Davey glanced around at all the boys, they murmed in agreement or in refusal. 'She'll be worth it.' William stood up, patting Davey on the shoulder.

'I tink' he's right. She'll be worth it', she's got somethin' real special.' William gushed. He hid his face from the others as he sat back down.

'She's special alright.' Clancy chuckled. Jack smirked at him, rubbing his jawline.

'I'M NOT DEAF!' I stood up. Everyone turned to look at me, eyebrows arched. Even Jack took intrest. 'I'm not stupid either!' I continued. 'I'm not a dog, I'm a human! I'm a person! So stop treating me like a piece of property! Because I don't belong to any of you! Not Jack, not Davey, not Crutchie, Mush or Richie.' I ripped off my vest, just leaving myself in a stripy shirt and trousers. I pushed through the others, as Jack gripped my shoulders and spun me around. His bright eyes stared down to me. I suddenly forgot what to do - or where I was going.

'You aint' leaving.' He whispered. His eyes were so intense, as they searched my face for a reaction. I stood there, frozen in his gaze. He leant forward closer, I could feel his breath on my face. 'I said - you aint leaving - not now, not ever.' I wriggled in his grip. I chewed the inside of my lip. His grip was growing on me, and it started to hurt.

'Jack - you're hurtin' her.' Crutchie whimpered. I kept eyecontact with Jack as he held me, his grip starting to turn my wrists blue with bruises.

'We can't afford it.' He hissed. His lips brushed the side of my face, and shivers exploded in my stomach. I swung my hand around and smacked him right in the mouth. I dashed away, a mix of new emotions exploding in my stomach. I could hear Mush running straight at Jack, and the sound of Crutchie's crutch hitting each step as he came after me.

But once I started running, I didn't stop. And he had no hope of catching me. I fought off the tears as long as I could, running down through the streets. I came across the Brooklyn bridge, and slowly made my way across it. I kicked away rocks as I made my way over, the sobs ricketing my shoulders. I felt empty, and emotionally, phisycally and mentally drained. Why was I so valuable to them? I was just some 'gurl'. I wasn't sepical. I didn't mean anything, how could I help? Yeah - I could make money. But it's not like I gave money to Jack. I made my own earnings. I didn't mean anything to Jack - and I'm sure I meant nothing to him.

I finally jumped down off the bridge. I could hear the howling of the city, and the crying of the ladies of the night. I stayed far as I could, from them. I moved down to the docks, sitting down on the warf. I shut my eyes as the tears rolled down my face.

'Jack Kelly given' you trouble, goil?' A voice came from the shadows.

Another update aswell tonight, stay tuned. :)
