John walked to the nearest bar, exhausted from dancing. His feet hurt, and his voice was hoarse from talking to the other wedding guests.
Of course, John was excited for his best friend to get married. And not just to any girl either, but one of the Schuyler sisters. Which was considered very impressive in New York.
John knew Eliza loved Alexander, and he loved her back, but neither of them knew John liked Alex. Or, at least he thinks.
Alexander and John were close friends. But John had hoped there was a slight possibility for the two to become more than friends. But, as usual, reality crushed any dreams John had, so he wasn't surprised when he heard about the wedding.
He walked up to the counter, sat down, and ordered a drink. Many men were around him, talking and shouting as they kept drowning themselves and their sorrows with alcohol.
The bartender looked at John while handing him his drink. "Son, are you okay?"
John looked up at him. "Yeah, just thinking about life and all the crap that comes along with it."
The bartender nodded and picked up a dirty glass, walking away. John stared at his glass, thinking about Alex. He was being stupid, but John couldn't help but feel jealous. He needed to snap out of it and support his friend. But could he?
"John?"
He turned to see Angelica, who sat beside him. She smiled at him. "What are you doing here?"
"I could ask the same to you." He replied, taking a sip from his glass.
"I suppose so." She laughed. "I guess I was tired of the guests at the party." She turned to the bartender and ordered a drink as John replied with, "That makes two of us." John knew she wasn't telling the whole story, but she kept quiet.
John took another sip. "You had a very nice speech, by the way. It was nice."
"Oh, thanks." Angelica looked at the floor. She was about to say something else when the bartender slid her drink to her. She thanked him and took a sip.
After waiting a few minutes for the alcohol to enter her, John asked, "So, Angelica, why are you really here?" He figured if she calmed down a bit, she'd start to talk more.
Angelica sighed, shaking her head. "It's complicated. And I couldn't tell you anyway."
"Why not?"
"Because it's personal!"
John paused for a second. "I'll tell you the truth as to why I'm here if you tell me why you're here."
Angelica looked up and laughed. "Why don't I believe you?"
John shrugged. "Heck, I'll tell you right now." He looked at her for some sort of reaction, but when she did nothing, he realized she was listening for his reason. Sighing, John continued. He trusted Angelica enough to tell her.
"I'm here because my best friend got married. And I had developed a close relationship with him, and-"
"And you developed feelings for him." Angelica interrupted. Blushing, John nodded and she gave him a small smile. "Me too."
"Oh," John said, shocked. Angelica had feelings for Alexander too?
"On the night of the winter ball, Alexander and I had met, and I instantly felt something towards him. His wit, his determination, everything just captivated me. I wanted him so badly, for him to be mine until I saw Eliza's face. Oh, she was so helplessly in love with him. I realized that they would've been better together than he and I. Besides, I would want my sister to be happy, even if it meant sacrificing my feelings towards him." Angelica explained, and John listened.
He understood what she meant. He saw Angelica walk up to Alex, and bring him over to meet his future bride. He saw the way the two danced together and talked to each other. He was there when Alex raced over to him, Lafayette, and Hercules with Eliza's first letter.
And then he was there when Alex announced that he had asked for Eliza's hand in marriage and that they were soon to marry.
John sighed, grabbed his glass, and held it up. "To loneliness."
Angelica, startled by his sudden action, smiled and grabbed her own. "To loneliness." She clinked the glasses together, and then took a sip out of hers.
