Calzona - Together Again

Chapter Five

- Arizona -

Richard stayed with me for two days, watching over me and putting in movie after movie. The morning where it began three days was the day he ordered me to "get off my ass and get to work."
So I made my bed, cleaned up the chocolate, got in the shower, and went to the hospital. He was right. It was time I got back on my feet.
April and Jackson were in the nursery with their new baby. "AWWWWWE!" I exclaim, running toward the baby. "Gimme gimme gimme!" I exclaim.
They hand over the soft, precious baby. "Hi." I say softly. "I'm your auntie Ari." I whisper.
"Arizona!" Richard shouts. "Work!"
"SHUT UP RICHARD THERE ARE BABIES IN HERE." I shout back.
Looking back at the Averys I smile sweetly.
"Robbins." Richard says, standing in the nursery doorframe.
"Fine." Rolling my eyes, I go to the attendings lounge where I see Meredith and Maggie. "Hey guys!" I say cheerfully.
"Zona! You're back." Meredith says, pulling me into a hug. "I know things were awful. I've been worried sick." She says.
I smile gratefully. Then, I slip into my scrubs and put the stethoscope around my neck.
Smiling at the sisters, I take my phone and look at the time. Calliope hasn't called me, and she didn't answer my calls. I was trying to not get anxious. She was fine. Sofie was fine. It was all fine.
Right?
Right.
"Karev!" I say, peeling Alex away from a conversation with Jackson.
"Catch me up with the NICU."
As we walk, he talks. "One baby was sent in yesterday. Two twenty four month preemies came in Wednesday. They're doing fine. Baby Andrew and baby Nadia were discharged. Baby Eric passed away Friday. You have three pregnant mothers who are all in need of
c sections and you have Baby Valerie in need of a heart transplant. Okay?"
"Got it, Alex. Thanks a Million."
He hands me a tablet. "Of course."

I saved four babies, did two c sections and yet I still I felt sick and empty.
Walking down the hallway after a long day's work, Miranda stops me in the hallway.
"Dr. Robbins." She says with a glare.
"Bailey."
"Two days. You were gone for two days."
"Was I?" I ask.
"Don't get smart with me. I'm a mama I know how to handle smart asses."
"You're lucky." I say. "You're a mom." I push pass her, whipping off my stethoscope angrily.
"Robbins!" She shouts. "You didn't lose your kid."
"You're right, Miranda!" I shout back down the hallway. ״I lost my daughter and the love of my life. You're telling me you would be fine if Ben left you with Tuck for another woman? You're telling me you wouldn't be broken hearted at all?" I shout, beginning to cry again.
"Ariz - I'm sorry. I shouldn't have been so insensitive. I'm s -"
"Enough." I say. "Enough."
I run into the attendings lounge and change into my normal clothes.
I decide to go to my old apartment. When Calliope and I bought a house together we never actually sold our apartment. I couldn't be in a big house by myself. I couldn't handle it. I drive to the apartment building. I say hello to our old doorman. I get in the elevator, and I hit floor 5.
I slide on my back down so that I was sitting. I curl up into a ball, trying to control my breathing.
I hear a ding, and then a voice.
"Robbins?"
I look up in tears to see Mark, looking down at me, concern all over his face. "Robbins what is it?"
"When I went into the bathroom at the airport." I say, clearing my throat. "She said 'You cheated on me. You're a slut. You're a whore. YOU DO NOT GET TO BE SAD. You do not get to make ME the victim. IT'S YOUR FAULT WE DIDN'T WORK. It's you're fault. So pull your slutty self together, Ari. Pull. Yourself. Together.' I don't know what to do with myself. Us breaking up, it's all my fault."
Mark walks in the elevator and scoops me up into his large arms. I remembered when my brother used to carry me like this. I bury my forehead into his neck. He puts one hand on my waist. He unlocks our old apartment with the key we gave him. He carries me into our old bedroom and lays me on my hospital bed.
"I'm staying with you tonight." He says.
"Weird." I say. "Love of my life leaves and I've already slept with two men." He rolls his eyes at my lame joke and says he'd be in soon and he needed things from his apartment.
