Fear.

It's a strange thing right? That just thinking of something can shake you to the core. For some people it's love, the boogie man, spiders. But for me? Planes.

I hate planes. So you can only imagine how well a three hour flight from Florida to New Hampshire went. Add in the additional factor of a stormy winter and constant turbulence and I was practically gripping onto my seat for dear life. You can bet your nonexistent boyfriend I didn't get a wink of sleep.

When the plane finally landed and I had gone through clearance checkpoints, I was picked up by a driver named Daniel. Apparently he didn't think it was funny when I checked what shoes he was wearing.

We hadn't spoken another word to each other since, so the drive was awkwardly silent. I filled the void by calling my dad and boyfriend, each of them telling me they loved me and be safe. I even tried to call my best friends, Sage and Cali, to tell them I was back in town and we should meet up, but theirs went straight to voicemail.

After an hour of driving, we finally stopped in the large circular driveway of my dad's estate. It stood grand and lovely on the large 15 acre lot. A well-manicured lawn surrounded the mansion and beyond that a small forest of some kind.

I emerged slowly from the car, admiring the familiar view and inhaling the scent of home.

Home. It felt good to be back.

Memories of the past 17 years I spent here flooded through my head. My family, my best friends, my first crush, my high school, and of course the trouble I was always getting myself into.

Daniel helped get my suitcase from the back and I handed him a generous tip. "Thank you, I've got it from here." I smiled, snatching my suitcase and bag and waving him off. I took the white marble stairs up to the ginormous double doors.

My dad was rich. He inherited most of the money he had through his family, as well as the family business. He had a lot of investments into profitable businesses and he even had his own company in the steel industry so money was never an issue with him. He never told me the exact dollar amount he had but I knew it was in the millions.

Dad said he might not be home when I got back, something about one of his business partners being in town, and judging by the fact that his Tesla wasn't parked out front, I took matters into my own hands. Skipping the traditional doorbell, I took out my key and tried the lock. It popped open and I let myself into the dark room. I set the bags down and flipped the light switch. The fluorescent lights immediately turned on and then a tumultuous boom of voices erupted.

"Welcome home!" Startled, a squeak left my mouth as I turned to see my house filled with at least a hundred people. They broke into laughter at my reaction and I immediately recognized the faces of friends, family, and people from school.
