I shake my head.
"I didn't come here to steal anything, David."
I twist and lunge toward the device.
The gun goes off and pain races through my body. I don't even know where the bullet hit me.
I can still hear Caleb repeating the code for Matthew. With a quaking hand I type in the numbers on the keypad.
The gun goes off again.
I close my eyes, waiting for the impact but it never comes. All I feel is the bullet barely graze my side, next to my rib cage.
I am suddenly more thankful for being small than I ever have in my life, but I cannot focus on my luck. I know David expects a wound, so I fall to the ground, pressing the green button as I do so.
I close my eyes and force my breathing to become shallow. David chuckles behind me, and I can tell that he believes he has won.
"It is truly a shame, Beatrice, that you had to go the same way as your mother. I would have liked to see you survive, but your rebellious acts have been a nuisance to us. Perhaps your brother will be more useful to us. Goodbye, Beatrice Prior." He says, with victory clear in his voice.
He believes that he has won. But he has not. I am not dead, yet. He hasn't won.
But death is close, for I can feel black seeping into my vision. I cannot die, not until he is dead and I will die peacefully.
The strong will to live seeps into my veins, and using every ounce of strength I posses, I pull out the gun I had been carrying with me in my suit. I can hear him move by me, but before he walks out of the door, I pull it up and point it at him. I do not want him to see me, so this last act of rebellion will not be too strong a reminder. I place my fingers on the trigger, and I feel weak, so weak, but I know that both of us can't live, and I don't want to be the one to die.
So I pull the trigger, and see it hit the back of his neck before I feel myself dive into blackness.
