"You're an idiot, you know that?" Tobias says, but he's laugh-crying so I know he doesn't mean to insult me. "Tris, I thought we had this worked out. Do you know what I would do if you had..." he trails off, but we both know where he was going.
"Tobias, it's okay, I'm okay." I say as I run my fingers through his hair, because his hand is shaking over mine.
His head snaps up. "Okay?! You're not 'okay' Tris. You got shot!"
"No, I mean sure, I'm not technically 'okay', but I'm going to be. It's going to be alright." I reassure him, and I mean it, I really do.
"God, I love you." He says, and I don't say anything because he knows I love him too, and it's just an unspoken agreement because I'm tired.
"Tobias." I say quietly. "Tell me a story. Anything."
He nods. "When I was a boy, my mother would play a game with me. She would take my hands, and we would spin in circles, and whoever let go was the loser. We would play it when my father was away, and I loved the silly little game."
I fell asleep listening to his voice, and somehow I knew that my promise of life wasn't empty.

When I woke again, I was in a different room. It looked almost the same, but the walls were a pale yellow that was unpleasant to stare at.
I was alone, and I was almost disappointed to be so, but at the same time I was relieved that Tobias was taking care of himself too.
A nurse walked in and smiled at me.
"Hi, Tris. I'm nurse Amy, and if there's anything you need, just tell me. I'm going to have to draw a bit of blood, for a few tests. Can you sit up for me?"
I sat up slowly, so my head wouldn't spin.
"Good. Please give me your finger." She instructed, and I held out my hand for her. She took it and pricked it with a needle, squeezing it and placing a straw over. I watched as the crimson liquid filled the plastic tube, until she drew away and smiled, placing a strip of gauze on the small cut.
"There. That's all I needed. I'm going to be in the other room, but call if you need anything. Also, there's a boy waiting outside. He's been there since you moved rooms. Would you like me to wake him?" she asked, and I nodded.
She flashed me one last smile before exiting the room.
Moments later, a tired Tobias came into the room.
"You were asleep for almost two days." He said, sitting in the chair next to my bed.
"I got shot, I need time to recover." I pointed out.
He sighed. "I know. But I was worried. Then, they told me that they're running all kinds of cancer tests, and I didn't know what was going on."
"Tobias." I said. I reached out, and he took my hand and pressed it to his lips, kissing my knuckles.
"I told myself that you were going to be okay, because you're my Tris, and you're strong." He said.
"Tobias." I said again.
We sat in silence for a while. He held my hand the entire time.
After about an hour, nurse Amy came back into my room.
"Hello, Tris. How are you feeling?"
"Better." I said.
She smiled. "Good. Well, I have news. The test were negative, so you're good to go. We're going to keep you here for three more days, and then release you. You'll have to come back once every three weeks for a check-up, but other than that, we'll give you a pain medication and send you out!"
Tobias answered for me. "That's amazing. Thank you."
Nurse Amy smiled before leaving again.
She smiled far too often for a hospital, but maybe that's what everyone needs.
