I wake up and realize it's only about 2 in the morning. I sit up and swing my legs over the side of my bed and stand up, feeling the coolness of the wood on my feet. I silently open my window and stick my hand out. It feels a bit chilly, so I pull on a pair of sweatpants over my pajama shorts and slip on a sweatshirt.

I quietly tiptoe down the hall, pausing to make sure my little sister Maisie is sleeping. I continue down the hall and down the stairs. I slip on a pair of flip flops before slipping out the front door and down the path.

I hurry towards the beach, not having to avoid many peacekeepers, since most of them are sleeping, and it technically isn't illegal to go to the beach, you just aren't really allowed to go there at night, but I do often. It's not a long walk to the beach, so I'm there in a few minutes. When I get there, I leave my shoes in the sand and walk down towards the water.

I sit down in the sand and look out at the water. The warm ocean breeze feels nice on a chilly night. My red hair whips wildly across my face, but I don't mind. I don't look like most people in district 4. Most people have blonde or light brown hair and tan skin, while I have fiery red hair and pale skin with freckles, as well as hazel green eyes. I get it off of my mom, who died a few years ago from an illness that spread around the district. My 6 year old little sister Maisie, on the other hand, looks just like a typical district 4 citizen, with her blonde hair and bluish gray eyes. She takes after my dad.

I close my eyes and smile as the smell of salty ocean water fills my nose. I feel a hand touch my shoulder, and I jump, afraid it's a peacekeeper. I look up, and instead of a peacekeeper, I see my best friend Alec.

"Geez Alec, you scared me, I thought you were a peacekeeper, or worse, my dad" I say as he sits down next to me. Getting caught by my dad out at night is sometimes worse than getting caught by a peacekeeper, since my dad is the mayor, and can be strict at times.

Alec has been my best friend for as long as I can remember. His dad and my dad were friends when hey were younger, so naturally, Alec and I became friends. He doesn't look a lot like he belongs in 4 either, with his dark brown, almost black hair and greenish blue eyes. Alec won the games last year, but he hasn't forgotten about me and still makes time to hang out.

"I figured you'd be out here, and I wanted to be the first person to wish you a happy 16th birthday," Alec says.

"Thanks Alec, but you know I don't care about my birthday," I say.

"I know Skylar, but I do care. And I got you something," Alec says and pulls a small box out of his coat pocket. I open up the box to see a necklace. It's a dreamcatcher necklace. The whole dreamcatcher is light blue, with a dark blue bead in the strings in the center, and there are two light blue feathers and one dark blue. It hangs on a silver chain.

"Alec, it's beautiful, thank you so much," I say and wrap my arms around him.

"You're welcome. I bought it in the capitol after my victory tour a few months ago. I thought of you when I saw it, because it's blue like the sky, which is your nickname, and you're also always dreaming," Alec says.

"Well thanks," I say and admire the necklace.

"Here, let me put it on you," Alec says and takes the necklace from me. I turn so that my back is towards him and hold my hair up on top of my head. Alec puts the necklace around my neck and clasps it in the back.

I let my hair down and turn back to the beach. The full moon glistens over the water, and a few birds fly in the distance. I'm amazed that such a beautiful place can have such darkness, and a place that should make you feel so free, instead makes you feel so trapped. If only things had turned out different. If only the war had ended differently, and the districts won. Then maybe we would be free. Children wouldn't have to worry themselves sick every year about the games, and 23 children wouldn't die every year.

"Earth to Sky," Alec's voice snaps me back to reality.

"Sorry," I say.

"Dreaming again?" Alec asks.

"Yeah I guess. My dreams mainly consist of what if's," I say with a small laugh and I run my thumb over my necklace.

"Mine too, except my actual dreams at night are nightmares," Alec says and looks down.

"Anyways, what were you asking me?" I ask.

"I was wondering if you were nervous for the reaping," Alec asks me.

"Not really, only a little. Since my dad is the mayor, I never need tesserae. So my name is only in there 5 times," I say.

"Well, if you do get picked, you'll have the best mentor in the world," Alec says with a laugh.

"Yeah, totally the best," I say with a hint of sarcasm.

We sit in silence for a while, listening to the soothing sound of the waves crashing onto the shore, and even in the distance. Suddenly I feel Alec's pinky finger touch mine on the sand.

"I have to go, my dad would kill me if he found out I left the house," I say, standing up, trying to hide the redness on my cheeks.

"Oh, ok, see ya later. I'll see if I can talk to you before I have to go to the capitol," Alec says with a hint of disappointment.

"See ya," I say and turn away from the beach. I hurry to where my shoes are and walk back to my house.

I arrive at my house and slip through the front door, not opening it too much, in fear that it would make a noise. I take off my shoes and tiptoe up to my room. I once again pause at Maisie's door and peek in at her, sound asleep in her bed. I smile and go the rest of the way to my room. I slip off my sweatshirt and take off my sweatpants before crawling back under my covers and falling asleep.
