I
Hate
School. That's all I need to say. Everyone does. It's the only thing I have in common with these kids. I don't like anybody at this school. But then again, I've been looking at stuff a lot that way. Filled with hate.... Aren't I a ray of sunshine?
It wasn't always like that. But whatever, the past is in the past and I try not to care about it. Boy is that hard.
Typically, forgetting is easy and remembering is hard. But sometimes it's hard to forget..... Especially in my case.
Anyways back to life.
I walk to my ninth grade classes bored already. I look up. English. Yaaayyyyy.
I'm dyslexic so obviously this sucks. And what's worse is that the teacher, Mrs. Apple, expects me to do well despite my disability. Heck, she only seems to register that I'm in the room, and nobody else.
Good for you, you have eyes.
"Today class, we are going to start a group project" she says flatly, tapping the board with a white board marker. I sit in the back of the room with my signature black hood over my head, shaggy Raven black hair assisting the veiling of my face as everyone starts chattering excitedly.
I know what's coming. "I'll be choosing your partners" I smirk at the 'aww's and disappointed murmurs. She starts calling our names, and I zone out, trying to ignore the paper airplanes flying in front of my face every time Mrs. Apple turns around. Did I mention I'm ADHD too?
I am itching to turn around and smack the launcher. If i could just... You know what? I think I'll just do it.
I twist around, snatch the next airplane from the kid's—Leo, I think— hands, crumple it, and toss it at his head. He stares at me, startled, and I glare at him, causing the poor kid to pale.
I love being scary."NICHOLAS DI ANGELO SIT IN YOUR SEAT RIGHT NOW!" Mrs. Apple growls. I spin around, knocking my knee on the desk, turning my glare to her.
She didn't... I think.
She did.
I could feel my blood boiling over. "I don't believe that's my name"I growl. The room falls silent under the tension.
"Excuse me?" She asks.I turn the sass on, "it says Nico on the attendance list doesn't it?" I tell her with a glare.
"To the principals office now!" She orders.
I grab my and I lift it onto my shoulder, weaving my way through the silent desks and out the door.Sometimes I don't even know what I think I'm doing. Part of me wants to behave well and actually try. Then I'm like, pfft nah this boy be goin A-Wall. (F: Anyone know how to spell that??)
But hey with my past, can you blame me?
I walk through the empty hallways, staring at the worn green carpeted floor, trampled by countless pairs of feet. I could feel my mouth twitch into a devious smirk.
Teachers, staff, and students alike stay well away. I'm fine with that.I see the dark red doors ahead of me and I push through them, marching down the many concrete steps and onto the sidewalk, following my shadow home.
The shadows pass over me, shielding me one by one by the blinding sun. They protect me. They're the only ones who ever do now.
My shadow merges into a huge dark void and I look up. I look into a huge, lonely house with darkened oak planks and old brick walls. It towers three stories above me, looking like a cliche haunted house.
Darn right it is.
I shoulder my bag and climb the crooked, creaking stairs, fishing for the spare key underneath a creepy garden gnome draped in moss. I glare at it, it glares back, taunting the lost boy inside this rebel shell, mimicking his disappointed gaze.
The door creaks open. "Hazel, I'm home!" I call, dropping my bag.
After a few seconds, a thirteen year old comes in, curly cinnamon hair bouncing everywhere. She smiles at me, draping me in a hug.So I leave my sister home alone. Big deal, it's not like somebody's gonna kidnap her.
We walk to the living room. "Why are you home so early?" She asks, almost running into a cabinet. I steer her away from it.
Hazel is blind. She lost her sight six years ago in an accident. It was one of the worst nights of my life. Another was about a year later, but that doesn't matter now.
Stay in the present, Neeks.
"The teacher was being stupid" I mutter. She frowns, "Again?"
I sigh, "yeah, so how was your day""Absolutely boring!" She complains "it's Tuesday so I had to listen to the news all day!"
A smile pulls at my lips. "It's 12:28, Haze" I remind her.
"Yeah, it was terrible!!"
I smile a bit.
"Is that it?" I ask, making some toast."Well, I talked to Frank today" she says. Frank...
I perk up. Frank was her best friend in first grade. They would do everything together before the accident, and they never saw each other again. I have no idea how she managed to make contact with him but... Wow that's a good accomplish.
"That's great, Hazel!" I tell her, jumping as the toast pops up."what did you say?"
"I asked if we could meet somewhere sometime" she says quietly. I put the knife down and turn to her.
"Are you sure...?" I ask. She's never wanted to go outside the house before, and I'm a little worried."I can handle it"
"Are you sure"
"Positive"
"Okay if that's what you want" I murmur, continuing to spread the butter."Besides, what could happen?" She points out with a light laugh. "You worry too much, Neeks"
I laugh internally. Yeah, I do.
"Oh, by the way," she says munching on a cracker, "I kind of... Signedyouupforsocialclasses"
I spin around, "what?!"
She sighs, "don't fret about it, you'll be fine!" A smile adorns her face. "Besides, what could happen?"
"Um... A lot of things, actually" I point out, carrying on the argument. She walks away.
"Hazel!" I protest.
"You start tomorrow!"
I sigh and fall onto the couch with my toast, adjusting myself so that my feet are in the air and my hair hangs off my head.
This will be a long few months...
