I am awoken by a car door outside my house. I picked up my phone: 8:30am. Great I thought I gotta kill three hours. It's Tuesday. It's early September, so it's still fairly warm outside. I don't have to be at school until 12:15, so I have a lot of time to waste before I go to school. I would love to be able to go back to sleep, but it was just one of those mornings where I couldn't. Oh well.
I sat up, and picked up my phone again. I had 14 notifications. Great. Nobody texts me I'm awake, but when I sleep I gotta wake up to all these. First up: A text from my cousin, Candice. Hey, sorry I fell asleep, talk to you tomorrow. Okay, I'll text her later. The next 12 were emails. I deleted them without reading them, they were all junk mail. The last notification surprised me. It was a text message from around 2:00am. Are you awake? The sender was even more peculiar: it was from Mila Whitman.
I had not spoken to Mila in almost three months, and I really didn't have a good reason why, other than I just didn't contact her. Around 2,000 thoughts raced through my head. Why is she texting me? Did she need me? Did I do something wrong? I didn't do anything to her, or maybe she misses me. Ding. My phone pulled me away from this trance. It was from Melon, a friend of mine who we call Melon because of his large head. You wanna go eat tonight? Jesus Christ, we go eat every night. Yeah, that's fine. My mom doesn't get home from work until eight anyway. I went back to thinking about Mila. For some reason, her simple, three-word text was driving me insane.
The last time me and Mila had spoken was the last semester of my Junior year. She had asked me what I planned to do that summer. I don't remember what I told her, that's not important anyway. I'm really not sure why I didn't speak to her at all during the summer--wait, did I tell her happy birthday?-- and that was strange, especially since she used to be such a huge part of my life.
I picked up my phone and texted Candice. You love sleeping don't you? lol, text me after school, ILY. No, I am not incestual, me and my cousin are just close.
I went to mine and Mila's conversation. Sure enough: I had texted her on her birthday, but the last text before that was from May 19th. I really need to delete my messages. I missed Mila. I really should've made a better effort to be nice to her. I read the text a few times. Are you awake? That could mean so many different things. I should text her back. I decided I would keep it simple and unassuming. Sorry, I was asleep. Well obviously you jackass. I pushed send, then undressed and got in the shower.
