Chapter 1 ~ They would not last forever.

" How long is forever?"
"Sometimes just a second"

"Where have you been?" he asked her in annoyance, his tone irritated and angry.

"Nowhere." he raised an eyebrow at her. This time, it was her turn to get annoyed.

"I told you! I didn't go anywhere special, just wandering around the streets." she responded through gritted teeth. That was a lie. Well, a half lie. But anyway, she didn't have to tell him where and what she'd been up to. It was her business. None of his.

"You have blood on your knees. No one goes nowhere and gets blood on their knees. Especially if they're wandering around the streets." he retorted, now anger boiling in his veins like hell fire.

She rolled her eyes, looking at the boy in front of her with absolutely no interest whatsoever. She looked at him with boredom, and thought of how dull he was. How normal.

Almost pathetic.

But it wasn't always like that. Once, she would have risked her life to save him,and he would have done the same thing for her, but things change.

Just like feelings.

Now, her feelings for him disappeared. She didn't know where did they go, but she wasn't complaining either.

It's just that, she didn't know how to tell him.

They've been through a lot; from killing an evil king and destroying his kingdom built from misery and fear, to befriend an ancient dragon that everyone feared. Always together. And throughout their journey, they even kissed, hugged, whispered into each other's ear words of comfort and shared dreams and hopes. They wiped away each other's tears of agony and desperayiom because they were in love. Once.

But now all that was gone.

Now when they looked at each other they only saw their partner in adventures, not their partner for life. But they couldn't admit this, not even to themselves. Because the fear of your heart capable of loving someone else when you were so sure that the person standing in front of you is your soul mate, is very, very scary for two individuals who never loved anyone but themselves and each other before.

They knew they were the typical book heroes that everyone shipped and that at the end of the book everyone knew they would be together forever. Everyone expected that to happen. But it just never worked out like that. Not all couples (especially the young/teen main ones) lasted forever. One day, they would both find someone else to love or they would find a different path to follow. Because stories don't finish when the book has ended, but they continue their course, only a bit less exciting and untold.

That was all.

Ever wondered why at the end of a book the author doesn't write:'And they lived happily ever after'?. Well, it's because not all couples last and not all of them live happily ever after.

Except for fairy tails, you might think, but have you ever really understood what that phrase at the end of the book meant? Or have you ever noticed that there is always a word missing at the end of that phrase? Probably not, after all, we see only the things that we want to see. That's why we never notice the fact that in fairy tails after the ending phrase 'And they lived happily ever after' they always leave out the word 'together'. Always.

Because - as I said - not all book couples last forever. But some of them do.

Well, at least that was not the case with Cara and Xander. They were destined to do great things together, but also fall apart and find someone new to do great things with.

And they did realized that -Cara first-, because after Xander's statement, long moments of deadly and tense silence passed in which both characters just looked at each other, lost in their thoughts, no longer capable of understanding each other anymore. And that's when they realized it, that that, was the end of their story as a couple, but no as an individual.

And they diverged into their own paths, not knowing that one day they would meet again.

Both holding hands with a different partner.

Yeah, yeah I know.

The chapter was quite short and depressing.

And you guys are probably spilling tears now that you know that not all favorite couples last forever, (Why do you think authors never write a chapter in the future about their marriage or about their kids?).

I know you hate me with all your heart right now but there's a reason why I wrote this chapter, and in the next chapters you'll understand. Please be patient.

Having said that, I promise a much more joyful and longer chapter the next time.
