Okay, listen closely, what you’re about to read is very important. My name is Keira King, and this is my story. Remember, you can’t give your trust to anyone.
I guess I’ve lived a fairly normal life. Living in Salvador Brazil with my over protective parents, and one very annoying brother. I speak 9 different languages, but my favorite besides Portuguese is English. English was hard to learn, but I’m always up for a challenge. My mom is very paranoid so I’m rarely allowed to leave the house. I had friends, but my mom never lets me see them. I went to public school, but in fifth grade my mom decided to home school me. My parents have been over protective from the start. They never let me answer the phone, and were very nervous when unannounced guest come.
I remember when I was eight I broke my mom’s #1 rule and answered the phone. The voice on the other end was deep, I couldn’t hear anymore then “eu vou te encontra-lo.” My mother took the phone away before I could respond.
Now that I’m older, nothing really changed. My mom is nervous all the time, she leaves the room when taking phone calls, and hired a maid to go into town for groceries. My dad on the other hand, is always working. When my leaves the house she tells the maid to “watch over me,” I don’t think she seems to get that I’m fifteen. I never realized how much I loved my mom until one fateful day…
“Mom could I go to the market,” I half yelled, trying not to waste my voice because I knew what the answer was going to be.
“Of course not keira,” my mom replied. “I need you here anyways.”
“Fine,” I mumbled, “but, could I at least go in to the forest?”
As soon as I said this my mom’s face was grave. She turned to me as her silky brunette hair fell in front of one of her eyes.
“You must never go in the forest,” she said. “Also, since your fifteen, dad and I have been talking, and were sending you to the U.S. to live there.”
At first I was confused. She went from very depressing to nervous again. I could feel the blood rushing to my cheeks when I realized what she said. I knew I was going to lash out. Seriously, how can she make a decision like this and not tell me. I felt the need to get back at her. So, as soon as she left to go to the market
I made my decision. I bolted out the back door and into the forest. I realized I was over reacting,
and that this wasn’t necessary, but I didn’t care. I’ve been treated like a child for so long and I just lost my temper. Leave it to my mom to ruin all of the fun. As I get older I feel like I’m loosing all my freedom.
While my friends get more freedom, I loose more. My parents were always overprotective. They never let me answer the phone, and are uneasy when uninvited guests come. Lately my parents have been nervous all the time. They decided to take me out of public school to homeschool me. After my brief flashback, my conclusion was to go to the market later.
“I’m going in to the forest,” I told her. The only problem is that I left before she could say anything. Luckily I already knew what she was going to say. I jump the fence and let my bare feet sink into the slimy mud. Sometimes I wonder what I’m stepping on, but then I ask myself if I want to know. As I slowly creep through the forest, I start to relax. I was very relieved to get away from my bratty brother. I didn’t realize that I was relaxing too much until I had no idea of where I was. At that point I just gave up trying to find my way back. It was still afternoon so I figured I had some time to explore.
As I was walking I stopped at a clearing, I can see how peaceful it is here so I think I might stay a while. I knew that someone has been here before. The footprints in the mud gave it away. As I sat there the wind was picking up and I could smell the storm coming. So I guessed I should leave.
“Cool,” I whisper to myself. I’m in the middle of nowhere so nobody would hear me anyways. There was something small and silver- sparkling- half way out of the ground. Upon further inspection it was just a candy wrapper. I will admit I was a little disappointed. Then out of the corner of my eye I saw it! In a tree stump, I found a small skeleton key. Normally I don’t like antique items, but this key was different.
When I look at the sky it was almost pitched black. “Shoot!” I yelled, knowing that it will be even more challenging to find my way back. I held the key in my hand and began making my way back. I just wished I would be back before my mom saw I was missing.
Boom!
Suddenly I blacked out and, when I woke up, I was standing inside of my room.
