Deborah walked up the steps to her office building. The big, imposing, architectural marvel right in the centre of the city. 'The News Herald' . She has been working here since three years as a junior editorial assistant in the TV news section. Pay was less, hours more, her boss - Paul was crap, coffee was poison, and Allison was a hitch. But still she loved working here. Since the day she stepped foot inside this building, she loved every bit of it. She would stand for hours in the news studio watching the presenters and the senior editors, walking around, discussing important stuff, taking long drags of ciggy while brainstorming on the news piece. This was the place where she first saw Shania Proust in real life, in front of her, presenting the 'News at Nine' to the whole nation. And it was 'Admiration At First Sight'. Deborah fell in love with the news industry ~ these are the people who can make or break anyone's career, whether a politician or a common man. Since, she was three, she had only one mission, to be a News Anchor, to sit at that blue news desk and smile confidently as the whole country tunes in to watch you read the news. But, yesterday's great screw-up act, has almost dashed that dream.. only a miracle could give her the job now..
Sigh!
"Debbie!! My love.. how are you?? I heard about that terrible plane ride.. oh how awful.. are you alright now?", Deborah saw Sally Watson, rushing towards her, shouting madly.
She smiled. Sally was her best buddy at office. Her very own Gossip Girl. Although Sally worked in the newspaper section and Deborah in the TV news, on separate floors, they both were like Sherlock and Watson. They used to meet everyday near the coffe vending machine on pretext of exchanging important information and files and used to while away their time gossiping about their respective floors. They met at the annual office party three years ago, when they both were interns in their respective departments and hit it off like house on fire. And since then, their friendship has only grown stronger over the years.
"Shh... I'm not deaf, Sally! Stop shouting.. and yeah it was awful.. Happy to be alive. So how was your hot date?", Debbie said good-naturedly.
Sally looked at the ground and blushed guiltily. "Oh Dubz, I'm so so sorry! Here you were calling me and I was flirting with a loonie in the bar!".
"Oh so he was a loonie? Huh?", Debbie chuckled.
"Oh don't even ask. There was no brain under that hot face! I wasted my time..", Sally said resignedly, "I'll take you with me on the next date, Oh .. I'm hopeless.. Your men radar is way better than me!".
Deborah gave her a lop-sided grin, "Aye Captain! But first let's rush to work.. Paul will bite my head off if I'm late".
They made their way to the lift. The door pinged open and they stepped inside, Deborah pressed the botton to 6th floor. Suddenly Nick entered the lift just as the doors were about to close.
"phew! that was close", Nick said, "Oh Morning girls! heard the latest news?"
"what? the new receptionist rejected you as well?", Sally smirked. She and Nick were always at each other's neck. Before he started working in the TV news department, he worked in the Newspaper section and was Sally's head. Once, he stole Sally's idea, when she was an intern and took all the credit himself and since that day, they don't see each other eye to eye.
"Uh.. No! Good guess.. anyway what I was telling you? ah, yes! Dylan is coming to 'The News Herald'... isn't that exciting?"
"Who Dylan?", Debbie and Sally exchanged confused looks.
"Duh! The heir to the 'The News Herald'.. The president of the corporation. Our boss' boss' boss. He's coming from America, this morning", Nick gave them a disapproving look. Silly girls, don't even know who they are working for!
