Violet Scales

My newborn mermaid daughter clung to me. I had finally reached the pod I lead. My two year old merman son Leon was rough housing with a few of the other two year old mermen. Mei clung to my near-see-through gold hip fins. I swam over to one of my close friends. Kiku was tending to his own new born merman. The young girl looked similar to Kiku. I called out to Leon and soon enough he grumbly came over to me. He did become intrigued with Mei soon after notiving her.

Sofia appeared with an upset look on her face. Winter had been harsh on all of us so it wasn't a surprise when we realised her child must've been stillborn. Sofia was still young compared to Kiku and I. I was very old, coming in at 17 years of age I was nearing the end of my life. Kiku was 16 and just like me, his age was starting to show. Sofia was 6 years old. My mother had accepted Sofia and her two younger siblings into our pod 2 years ago. Sofia's two younger siblings were both mermen. Natalya was the youngest and she had only left the pod last year. Ivan, the middle child, returned to collect his younger sister and the two of them had swam off.

Ivan had promised to return to me when he felt slightly more experienced. I hoped that he would return this year but you could never know for sure. I was nervous when I had noticed mermen in the distance but that was gone when I heard familiar clicks and squeaks. The young mermen bolted as a large merman swam over. Ivan stopped in front of me as Natalya hung back in the distance. One of my mermaid children, Im Yong Soo swam over to Natalya and started botherng her.

Ivan flicked his tail to move closer before flirtatiously moving his body forward before moving slightly backwards. I quickly returned the flirtatious gesture, which was harder for me due to the small child that clung to my hips. Ivan edged closer and I squeaked for Mei to go to Kiku, that was why I had introduced her to the older male. Once Mei had gone slowly over to Kiku I lead Ivan away from the group.

Mei returned to my hips as Ivan and Natalya swam off. Another merman had appeared and mated with Sofia. The male had apparently travelled from Turkish waters to spread his blood to other parts of the world. Sofia had been happy to know she would be helping the merman with his dream.

The next year trouble happened. Leon's father, a merman named Arthur, had appeared to collect his son to join their bachelor pod. At the same time I had already given birth so Arthur wanted to hit two birds with one stone. He had started his flirtations and while in the middle of it Ivan and Natalya appeared. Arthur was still in his prime age and was a very experienced fighter. Ivan did have the size and by the looks muscle advantage but that didn't mean everything.

Arthur swam off. There was no fight. Arthur had said he didn't care, he apparently had a mermaid pod awaiting him further East. Ivan was just as surprised as I was. Arthur was renowned around these ocean waters for being such a deadly fighter and that he would never back down if challenged. I gave Leon a quick kiss before the merman hurriedly swam off to follow his father. There was no one else with Arthur which made me happy. Leon must have been worthy enough to swim with Arthur. 

Arthur did mate with Sofia though. The Turkish male didn't return this year. Sofia hadn't been overly happy mating with someone other then the Turkish merman, but she was happy to bear the child of Arthur. Sofia had showed off her newborn to Ivan and Natalya and both of them had been happy to see such a large smile on their older sister's face. Natalya did not show too much happiness but she never left her niece's side.

Ivan was very interested in his young merman son. He even stayed a bit longer then necessary to swim a little with Andrei. Mei had shown slight jealousy, which I found quite funny. Her father had shown no interest in her when he had passed by once before mating season. I swam over to her and plaited shells into her hair to comfort her. It did it's job and I had been amused when she had claimed she would mate with Ivan.

I waved goodbye as Ivan and Natalya swam away. Mei was next to me and was also waving goodbye. I swam down to where a baby mermaid sat on the sandy ground. Kiku had swam off one night without his daughter. He still had yet to return. Kiku had most likely gone off to peacefully pass away. As matriach of my pod I accepted the role of mother of the baby. I scooped her up and carried her as I swam around.

Ivan returned the next year to find a different mermaid approach him first. The pod had already been mated so the mermaid demanded they leave. Ivan had questioned what was happening and why I had not approached first. The mermaid told Ivan that I had passed away two days before. Ivan was in shock but promised Andrei he would return to collect him the next year.

Ivan kept his promise and adopted Andrei into his small bachelor pod. That was where Andrei found out how many pods Ivan and Natalya would visit. He met some half-siblings he never knew existed and even play fought with his younger mermen siblings. He did need Ivan to step in when an angry mother started chasing him for accidentally hurting her child. A sharp growl from Ivan sent the pair swimming, but it didn't mean Andrei got out of trouble.
