it was early in the morning when Jo Wilson awoke to the sound of running water and birds chirping outside her window. she groaned to herself before ripping the sheets off her body. she made her way into the kitchen to see a freshly showered and dressed alex karev.
"hey" he turns around with a smile."morning" she smiles back. "are you ready for your interview?" she asks, inching closer. he had gotten an offer from another hospital that was too good to pass up. although she was upset about the idea that her boyfriend wouldn't be working with her, she was happy for him that he had the opportunity.
"yeah" he yawns, clearly exhausted from being stranded at the hospital all night and day for at least 4 times this week. she examines him. he was so handsome.
"you're so tired, you forgot your tie" she giggles, grabbing the royal blue tie from on top of the wood dresser. he looks down his suit.
"oh, I didn't even notice" he shrugs, looking at her.
"come" she grabs his hand and leads him to the couch. She wraps the piece of fabric around his neck and begins tying it.
"you're going to do great. they'd be crazy not to give you the job, as long as you don't fall asleep" she teases, continuing to put his tie on. there was no response. she looks up to see him with his eye closed. she pauses.
"alex" she says softly. he was clearly asleep. Jo smiles to herself. he was adorable when he was sleeping. she leans in and kisses his cheek in attempt to wake him up.
"im good" his tired eyes jolt open. "sorry. what were you saying?"
"stay awake, silly" she smooths out his tie.
"it's just, Robins is out of town this week, and she left me with her crap, plus my own. this is the first time I've been home in days" he complains. normally, he wouldn't complain about his job, but at times like this, it's all you really can do until it passes.
"i know" she caresses his face. "im sorry"
"it's okay" he sighs. "robins is coming back tonight, so i guess i can have an intern stay and monitor my patients, and they can page me if they need me" alex felt guilty for leaving her alone as often as he has been. she needed someone to be with her as much as he needed someone to be with him.
"i like that idea" she smiles. she missed having him here. it felt so, empty without him.
"me too" he smiles. "im going to go make some coffee. do you want some?"
"no thanks" she yawns. "i still have a few more hours before i have to go to the hospital myself"
"okay" he makes his way into the kitchen and puts on a pot of coffee for himself. this was the only thing that was going to get him through the day. he pours the steaming beverage into a traveling mug from where they worked, Grey-Sloan Memorial Hospital and takes a sip.
"better?" she laughs.
"much better" he chuckles. "well, i have to go now if i don't want to be late. I'll see you later, okay?" he quickly kisses her before slinging his bag over his shoulder.
"okay" she smiles. "bye. good luck!" she yells as he heads for the door.
"thanks. bye. i love you" he says for before exiting their little house.
"love you too" she responds, not knowing if he heard her or not. walking towards the dresser, she pulls out one of alex's sweatshirts and fits her tiny self into it before crawling back into bed. she often stole his cloths when he wasn't there, so it always felt as if a part of him was with her on those lonesome nights. the smell of him filled her as she snuggled into the oversized shirt. being a surgeon was tough, but moments like this made it all worth it.
