Chapter 3 • What Stays in The Dark...
It had been three weeks, every morning and afternoon Chanel got to see Angel til D' Mario took her home.
"What time your shift end?" Her co-worker, Roger asked.
"Five minutes." Chanel replied as she looked up at the clock.
So far, her life was falling into place. She had got a job in the mall, at DTLR. She almost had Angel call her mother but before Angel finished, she stopped and called her Chanel instead. She hadn't talked to D' Mario in weeks, at first it made her want to give up before she forced her mind to get him out of her system. In a few weeks, she was planning on taking her GED tests. Every night she was was studying, pacing herself to the fullest. She knew how much she could take and how much she couldn't. She was even planning on getting an apartment when she was ready.
She rung up everybody in her line before switching places with another co-worker. She walked out to the food court where she pulled her phone out of her pocket. The only people she actually talked to was her parents, Roger, her best friend Vanessa, and D' Mario if she wanted to see Angel.
She opened Instagram before going to the search bar and typing DMarioBradley.
She felt like a stalker but she couldn't stop herself from looking at his page. She never knew he even had a Instagram til she saw one of the females she was following, post a picture of him as her #MCM. Maybe it was childish for her to get jealous but the thirst the female was showing sparked something inside of her. Her caption said: MY #MCM EVERYDAY @DMarioBradley! The only man, I know will never hurt me, my boo! Follow his sexy ass. :* <3
But when she saw his comment, she couldn't help but laugh: DMarioBradley; Do I kno u?
She strolled down his page and clicked his latest photo. It was a picture of him and Angel. DMarioBradley; Me and My baby girl, the only thing that gets me by everyday. The only thing saving me from giving up, she my anchor.
Chanel couldn't help but smile, he truly was a good father. She thought about liking the photo but she knew even if she did he wouldn't notice because of the 500+ likes it had already.
She scrolled to the comments before reading:
PrettyPatricia; Awww, she's beautiful. Her mother must be gorgeous :)
VANESSAVATEYA; Family picture? Where my girl Nel at?
DMarioBradley; ion kno. get off my page, big head @VANESSAVATEYA
DMarioBradley; thanx & she is @PrettyPatricia
BeautyByBonita; Dam, she a spitting image of u, u did real good ;)
DMarioBradley; aha, thanx ma @BeautyByBonita
She smiled at the comments and ignored the rest that said how sexy he was, not acknowledging Angel.
She went to her feed and looked at the five new people who had followed her before following three back.
She sighed as Roger tagged her in something on Instagram. It was a picture of her: RogerTheDon; @ChanelX is even beautiful off guard!
Even though Roger was the perfect gentlemen, she wasn't ready for anything he had to give. She loved him like a best friend. She liked the picture before putting her phone in her pocket and going to order pizza.
----------------------------------------------------
D'Mario didn't want just a job, he wanted something official. He wanted to do something big. So far, he hadn't got a call back from anyone. He was considering working with his cousin at his corner store but it seemed too dangerous. Around Manhattan, every week some small store on the block got robbed and someone was possibly hurt and D'Mario didn't want it to be him next.
Vanessa, Chanel's friend since elementary owned a store called Vateya. It was somewhat popular, almost everyone in New York knew about it. She was willing to offer both him and Chanel a job there but they both declined, they wanted to build their self up without any help from anybody else.
Though Vanessa had a lot of money coming in, she still lived like everybody else. No big house, no million dollar car, she only used her money for family, bills, and groceries.
Vanessa was the only of Chanel's friends that actually acknowledged Chanel being back in town. Over the years that Chanel had went missing, Vanessa and D'Mario became much closer on a best friend level. They were nothing more than friends.
"What you want for Christmas, Angel?" Mario asked as he waited for Mrs. Robinson.
"I wanna go see mommy." Angel said.
Ever since Angel spent time with Chanel, she was obsessed with her. Angel never called Chanel mom when she was around her but when it was just her and D'Mario, she only addressed her by mommy. He was planning of Chanel spending Christmas with them.
"What else you want?"
"A doll!" D'Mario sighed. She had been wanting another doll ever since she saw the commercial of one that basically did everything. It ate, it peed, it pooped. Mario knew as soon as she got bored with it, she would never pick it up again.
He had been saving up since January and he wanted Angel to have a special Christmas this year since her mother was home. It would be her and Chanel's first Christmas together.
"Wanna take a picture Angel?" He asked.
She shook her head, "No"
"But you look cute today." He told her as he lifted her in his arms.
She was dressed in a black cheetah crew neck with black pants and a butter Timbs. She had two braids leading into her curly ponytail.
She made a face before burying her head into his chest.
Mrs. Robinson walked into walked from out of Angel's room with a comb, a brush, and grease.
Mario set on the carpet while Angel sat on his lap and Mrs. Robinson sat on the couch. Mario turned on the TV and Angel clapped as Doc McStuffins came on.
Mrs. Robinson brushed D' Mario's hair while he continued to watch cartoons with Angel.
"You talk to Chanel?" She ask as she parted his hair and put grease on his scalp.
"Nah" He replied.
"She got a job, she saving up. After she get her GED she's planning on starting a drivers class." Mrs. Robinson told him as a small smile grew on his lips.
"That's good. At least she trying."
Angel lied her head against his chest as her eyes closed.
"You seeing anybody?" She asked while braiding his hair.
"I ain't feeling anybody right now, not while Angel getting used to having her mom around." He told her while wrapping his arms around Angel's small body.
"What about Chanel?," She started, "Do you love her?"
He knew that question was coming.
"She been back for nearly a month, I want her to get comfortable. She doing good, I don't wanna distract her. That's my baby, ima always love her. She was my first love, she gave me Angel. She gone always be in my life. I don't think she ready yet." He confessed.
"She told me she wants an apartment. I'm not ready for her to be alone." Mrs. Robinson told him with a worried look on her face, "What if she runs off again?"
"She won't. She came too far to go running off again. Maybe an apartment is good for her, she need to adjust to relying on herself."
Mrs. Robinson sighed, "Sometimes I wonder what was she doing in the last two years. I know my baby, she can't survive by herself for two years, not out here. She wouldn't survive a week. Something just don't add up."
"You asked her?"
"Sometimes I try to but she's still upset about it," She paused for a second, "She starts shaking.. She seems scared. Something happened."
D' Mario nodded before he bit his lip. What really happened?

Chanel kept her head down as she walked to the closest bus stop. She had already missed the bus closest to home so she had no choice but to take the one near D' Mario's.
She stood at the stop while she pushed her hands in her coat pocket. It was too cold. Maybe D'Mario could drive her home.
"You ok, lady?" She turned her head to see a man dressed in all black. He pulled off his hood and gave her a smile. She could see a hint of desire and want in his eyes, he looked so familiar. He carried a smooth vibe to him, but she knew behind those eyes he was up to a lot of things. He had eyes just like those..
"I'm fine." She told him before turning forward. He took the few steps next to her before introducing himself.
"I'm Chris." He told her. That name was so familiar too.
She nodded before looking forward. She had only came to catch the bus, not chat.
She could feel his eyes on her. She sighed in relief when the bus came. He got on to and took the seat behind her. Once again, she could feel his eyes burning into the back if her head. Instead of acknowledging his presence, she put in her head phones before Rico Love's They Don't Know filled her ears.
She rose up when her stop came, relieved that he wasn't getting off here. She walked to Mario's front door before knocking. The front door opened before he looked down at her.
"Chanel?"
"I missed the bus home. Can you drop me off?" She asked.
He opened the door wider and let her in, "Angel asleep, I ain't gone wake her up. You can stay over here."
She nodded before taking her coat off just as Angel walked in with her pajamas on, rubbing her eyes.
"Damn," D' Mario whispered before he walked over to her and picked her up, "What you doing up, mama?"
"I heard mommy." she wrapped her arms around his neck before looking back at Chanel.
Chanel grinned, she finally said it.
"Hey, sweet cakes." She told her as Angel held her hands out for her and she took her in her arms.
D' Mario smiled as he sat on the couch and looked for a movie to help Angel fall asleep.
Twenty minutes later, Angel was back to sleep.
D laid on the bed as he watched Chanel turn around and pull off her shirt. She tugged her pants off til she was only in boy shorts and a bra. They couldn't be uncomfortable with each other, they had a child together. They used to be each others best friends and lovers. To D'Mario, it was nothing he hadn't seen before.
D' Mario continued to watch her as she looked down at the black photo book on his dresser before picking it up. She settled beside him in the bed before flipping it open.
The first picture was him and his brother, she guessed. They couldn't of been older than ten. D' Mario had a fresh cut with his church clothes on while the boy next to him wore the same thing. He looked so familiar.
She flipped to the next page where she couldn't help but smile. It was a picture of her, him, and Vanessa when they were fourteen, her hair was in two pigtails while D'Mario had his in small twists. Vanessa had hers in a simple ponytail while they all smiled at the camera, a little too hard.
D'Mario pulled her against him before he settled his chin against her shoulder and his hands on her stomach.
The next picture was when they were seventeen, Chanel was three months pregnant with her little baby bump and D' Mario was kissing her cheek. she frowned as she noticed the small bruises on his bare chest.
It was crazy, how fucked up the world could be..

Chanel pulled her dress up as she carefully put on her mascara as D' Mario's car came to a stop.
"Thank you for taking me." She told him as he sprayed cologne on his wrist and rubbed them together.
"You welcome, ma." He told her before looking over at her while moving his braids out of his face. She applied her lipgloss before opening the door of his car.
He got out too before locking the doors and grabbing her hand as they walked in the club. As soon as you walked in, a banner with HAPPY BIRTHDAY VANESSA was the first thing you noticed. Her girl had went all out.
Chanel kissed Mario's cheek before letting his hand go, "Ima go find Vanessa."
Over the past few weeks, her and D'Mario had gotten so much closer. Everybody noticed it, even Angel.
D' Mario sat Chanel on his lap as they watched Lilo & Stitch with Angel. Chanel laid her head against his chest while Angel watched them from her blanket on the carpet where she had her popcorn everywhere.
"Daddy?" she called out.
"What's up, mama?"
"Is mommy your girlfran?" She asked.
Chanel chuckled, she was curious of his answer.
"Who told you about girlfriends?" He asked as he looked down at her.
"Spongebob." She chuckled at his facial expression.
"You not watching sponge bob no more." He told her while Chanel laughed.
"But she is a girl, daddy!" Angel pouted.
They had no title but parents and friends.
Vanessa was in her booth with her cake in front of her. Happy 20th Birthday, Vanessa was written on the cake. Chanel pushed through the crowd and took a seat next to Vanessa in her VIP section.
"Happy Birthday!" Chanel told her.
"You late, what was you and Mario doing?" Vanessa told her as one of the bartenders brung a tray of shots. Vanessa took two and gave it to Chanel, "Drink these."
"You know I don't drink." Chanel told her.
"It's my birthday, let loose for me baby doll."
Chanel took the liquor from her hands before swallowing it. She cringed as the liquor went down her throat before taking the other one and doing the same.
"You tryna get her drunk?" D' Mario asked as he sat Chanel on his lap.
"Not drunk but tipsy." Vanessa told him as she smirked as Chanel laid her head against his shoulder.
"I'll be right back." Vanessa told them before standing up and going off with some man.
"Don't drink that." He told her as she went to pick up the last shot, "C'mon."
He took her hand before walking to the dance floor. She wrapped her arms around his neck as he grabbed her hips. He nuzzled his lips against her neck as she pressed against him. She turned her head, giving him access to her neck. His lips latched onto the sensitive skin before he sucked. She moaned in pain and pleasure as his hands traveled to her ass, gripping it.
He pulled back before his lips connected to hers for the first time in two years. He grabbed her thighs before lifting her up and walking to the nearest exit.
Vanessa would have to celebrate without them...
