New Beginnings

The Calabasas mid-May sun gleamed off my aviators as I turned on my brand new black Mercedes SUV. Before I pulled out of my driveway, I pinched my arm and checked my mirrors. It felt so ridiculous, me in such an expensive car. It felt so surreal, that every so often I had to pinch myself to make sure I wasn't dreaming. My life was currently way too good to be true, and I was just nervously counting the minutes until something terirble happened. First off, my mom had finally let me come home from boarding school and take acting classes. It went great and the classses had just finished up a couple months ago. My grades had drastically improved and I had even lost 35 pounds (In a completely healthy and safe way, of course!). But my mom winning the lottery a month and a half ago really took the cake. I had come home from school and found her dancing with my grandma in the living room, screaming that she wouldn't have to work. Things got even better with time, My mom's fiance moved in with us, from Australia, and my style went from the "Sale" rack to the "New Arrivals". But that wasn't even the best part! Late last month, which would be April, my mother came to me with some very exciting news. She had decided to buy a temporary home in California (Calabasas to be exact). My uncle had just moved there and she wanted to spend some time with him. So 3 weeks ago, we flew to Calabasas, took a cab over to our new house, which so kindly introduced my jaw to the floor. This house was amazing! It was so big, it had so many huge windows and I got my own bathroom!

Like I said, the past weeks have been really fun, aside from the whole homeschooling thing. I even had friends! My acting coach introduced me to some other actress in my area and we hit it off immediately. Spencer had long brown hair, blue eyes and some freckles, she looked like your typical sweet, all american-girl. But her potty-mouth and attitude didn't match her "girl-next-door" appearance. Zoe had blonde, brown eyes and sharp cheekbones. She was really, really smart but didn't always act like it. Both of them had been featured on the Disney Channel, ABC Family, NBC and other various televison networks. They even brought me to a red carpet charity event last week. So it was safe to say that I had pretty close with them.

I pulled into the In-and-Out that I was meeting my friends at and quickly pulled into a parking spot near the door. I saw quite a few paparazzi people around the burger place but thought nothing of it. I squeezed past them, into the fast food place, and looked around for my friends. Zoe waved over to me from a booth near the bathrooms. "Hey!" they said in union. "Hi," I answered back, "What's up?" They told me about their days, and I told them about mine. "Want some?" Spencer said, pushing her tray of fries towards me. "No thanks, I'm just ha-". I was cut of by a trio of guys who had approached our table. "Hi" said the one in the middle. He was very attractive and looked oddly familiar. "Hi.. Can we help you with something?" asked Spencer sassily. "Well we saw you guys sitting over here, alone, and what kind of gentlemen would we be if we didn't come and keep you company?" said the shortest one, with a grin. "Well that's really nice of you.. but, we're not interested." answered Spencer. "Hey! Speak for yourself," said Zoe, biting her lip a little and batting her eyelashes at them. I laughed into the straw as I sipped some of Spencer's drink. I crinkled my nose at the taste and fizz of her diet coke, causing the black guy to laugh and say "Moises, dude, stop, she can smell you cheesy lines from there". I laughed out loud, and looked up at the guy's face. Wait, Jesus Christ, I know who he is!  Wait! I know who you are! You're Jaden Smith! He chuckled, "Correct! And this is Mateo, and this is Moises". We all scooted over so they could sit down with us, and I caught Zoe and Spencer gawking at them. "So," I said loudly, trying to snap them out of their trance, "your albulm was great, I know like every word". "Thanks, I'm glad you liked it" he said, "we're about to head to Skatelab, do you guys wanna come?" Zoe blurted "yes" before he had even finished his sentence, and Spencer nodded so hard, I thought her head would fall off. I wanted to go, obviously but I was a little nervous. "We don't know how to skate though," I said, shrugging off the glares I recieved from my friends. "Well then you have to go! We'll teach you guys to skate!" said Mateo eagerly. I agreed, slidding out of the seat and pulling out my car keys. "Follow us," Jaden said with a wink as he dangled his car keys in front of my face.

My Mercedes SUV, Zoe's Lexus, and Spencer's Range Rover all followed the boys' blacked out Lincoln SUV through the California traffic. They pulled into the parking lot of Skatelab, the "Indoor skate and Musuem". The boys filed out of the car, acting rowdy. Boys I thought, with a slight eyeroll. We trailed behind them, into the building. I looked at the skateboards on the wall and realized that I was probably going to make a fool out of myself infront of one of Hollywood's most popular teens. Great.  A employee came out, did a little handshake with the guys, and then handed us all skateboards. I picked a good day to wear Vans. We split of into pairs, Moises with Zoe, Mateo with Spencer, Jaden with me, and they tried to teach us how to skate. Zoe was actually really good already, since she played a "skater girl" in a student film once, but even Spencer and I caught on pretty quickly. "You're a natural!" Jaden yelled, as he stood watching me swerve through some cones. I turned back and tried to yell something witty back at him but I couldn't. Why? Becasue I had hit a cone and went flying at the ground. Jaden ran to me, and pulled me up to my feet. I felt an electric current run through my fingers when his hands held mine. "Are you okay?" he asked, still holding my hands. I nodded quickly, "Yeah, yeah, I'm fine." He stared at me, and I felt my face burning under his gaze. God, I hope there's nothing on my face. We shared this silent connection until we heard Spencer whistle. We both turned to find the others staring at us. Mateo crossed his arms, Moises wore a grin, Zoe even smirked and Spencer raised her eyebrow. Jaden and I immediately let eachothers hands go. And I tried to look as innocent as I could. "What?" I asked, srcatching my head. "You know what" Spencer answered. I avoided their eyes, looked down at my now scuffed shoes, and then at Jaden next to me. He shurgged his shoulders with his hand in his pockets, a smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. I checked my phone, and it read "9:32pm". I turned to everybody, "It's getting sort of late and my mom gets worked up really easily.." I sighed. "Wait, wait, I have to take your picture" Moises called. I groaned, "You shouldn't, I'm not very photogenic." Moises ignored me and directed me towards the concrete was that had the Skatelab sign up on it. I stood next to the sign, and smiled a little. Moises laughed, "Perfect, this is going on the blog". "Do you really have to go?" Jaden asked. "Yeah, she really does, her mom is crazy strict" answered Zoe. Spencer and I nodded in agreement. "It's true, African mothers don't fuck around," I said with a shurg, "Girlies, call me tomorrow, and guys.. it was super cool meeting you". They waved with smiles as I walked out of the front doors.

By the time I got home, it was already 10:15. I trudged up the stairs and straight into my room. After taking off my shoes, I wiggled my toes into the plush carpet of my room. I grabbed the house-phone and hopped onto the bed to listen to the messages. "Hey Maia, it's Paul, I booked you an auditon for disney! Nothing major, just a small recurring, but still. I emailed you the sides, call me back". Paul Treslin, my agent and a cool guy. I also noticed a not on my pillow which read: "Joseph and I are going out. Don't wait up. -Mom". I crumpled the note and shot it into my garbage can. I fired up my computer, and looked over the email form Paul. After reading it over a couple times, I decided to get some extra sleep. I washed my face, brushed my teeth, put on pajamas and crawled into bed. Did today really just happen? There's no way I just hung out with Jaden Smith. I pinched myself, one more time. He was so.. normal. Well as normal as a person can be while having paparazzi chasing him and screaming girls  stop him for pictures and autographs. I didn't understand why he wanted to hang out with me... and I thought about this until I drifted off to sleep.
