"I swear Ray if I catch you sticking that glue stick in your mouth one more time..." I sighed running a hand through my disheveled hair. I swooped in and took the glue stick from the bright eyed boy before he could protest.
Just then the bell rang that signaled for lunch and I thanked whatever supreme force existed. "Okay, line up guys! I'll be right here when you get back from lunch" I said giving them an exhausted but genuine smile.
I noticed Annabelle giving me a look and I arched an eyebrow at her. She walked up to me quietly looking at the ground "Can I eat lunch with you?" She asked in a hushed voice. I melted a bit but I seriously needed a break today."Tell you what sweetie, I'll eat lunch with you Monday. I'll even pack us some food so we don't have to eat cafeteria food. Is that okay?" I asked bending down to her level trying to balance in my black pumps and pencil skirt.
She gave me big smile and looked me in the eyes for a second "Okay!" she said rather excited and fell into line with the rest of the kids. I spotted Leo talking to Ray and then he spotted Annabelle giving her a big toothy grin. I melted all over again.
As soon as they were out the door I breathed a heavy sigh of relief. You could tell it was Friday around here, the kids were wild and excited to leave for the weekend. The week had went well and today was officially my second day at the community college and Landon's first day in my class.
I grabbed my purse and made a dash for the front door of the school. It was weird that I hadn't taken the chance to try and get to know my co-workers but I really just wanted to be alone at lunch time. So I ended up walking to the place that Keegan had shown me pretty much every day now.
I made my way to the door and saw the now familiar face of Craig at the counter. The bell on the door rang when I walked in heels clicking on the tiled floor. Instead of sitting at a table I sat at one of the stools at the counter and leaned forward on my elbows letting out a sigh of relief as the weight of my body was taken off my poor feet.
I looked up and saw Craig grinning back at me "Hard day, flossy bell?" He asked me. I gave him a grin back. He's taken to calling me flossy bell and I didn't argue, it sounded like such a sweet term of endearment.
I nodded "The kids are rowdy today, not to mention I didn't get much sleep last night because my brother insisted that I stay up and watch a movie with him" I sighed. I did enjoy that Apollo just wanted to spend time with me but I seriously needed my sleep. I smiled to myself thinking of how well Apollo and Leo had gotten on, though honestly it was probably because secretly Apollo acted like a big kid himself sometimes. I was glad because Apollo had agreed to watch Leo tonight while Landon and I were in class.
Suddenly Reene popped around the back of the counter from the kitchen her blonde ponytail bouncing. She sat down what looked like a milkshake in front of me along with my usual turkey wrap that I got. She winked at me "It's a coffee milkshake, perfect pick me up" She said as she walked away to go cater to another customer somewhere in the place.
"She's a good kid" I said taking a drink of the milkshake and instantly falling in love. Craig laughed and nodded "She's one of the best" He drawled.
I chatted with Craig for a while, swapping stories. He told me stories and folktales he had grown up hearing here in the south and I told him stories that my Elisi and Edudi used to tell me about the Cherokee culture.
I finished my wrap and gave Craig the money to pay for my lunch "Well time to finish the school day" I said stretching. Craig gave me a smile "Have a good day and stay safe flossy bell" He said as I nodded my head at him.
