So, I was going through some old writing, and I found this scene from chapter 21 (the dance) I deleted for wound count. I just put it back in, since I liked the moment and IDK, there's something very appealing to me about Angelos Disney songs. I don't know why. So, yeah. Jaylin and Angelos duetting Once Upon a Dream.
There's the song, here's the scene.
"Hiya, Angel," she says with a smile, a sappy fifties song blasting from the speakers. Three-fourths of the girls burst into squeals, Heaven's groan so loud it nearly shakes the place. I know you, I walked with you once upon a dream...
My mind whirs with recognition. I squeeze my eyes shut. Gats...
"I know you! I walked with you once upon a dreeeaaammmm-"
"Shut up, Angel! You sing that one more time and I'll-"
"Admit it! Admit it, admit it, admit it! You're man-crushing on prince-what's-his-face!"
"Am not!"
"Then why are you humming that song!"
"Because...because it's none of your business!"
"Uh huh. I knooooow you! The gleam in your eyes is so familiar a gleeeeaaaammm!"
"Angel?" Jaylin snaps her fingers, jolting me into the moment. "You know the lyrics?" She beams at me, practically glowing, and I feel a twinge better just seeing her like this.
"Uh, yeah. Um, sorry for humming."
"No, no, no!" she squeals, hooking her arms around my shoulders. "Can you sing it?"
"There's a lot of people here," I say as she pull me onto the floor and into the masses. She expects me to sing? She may be the girl of my dreams, but she's crazy!
"Come on!" she laughs. "Who cares? I'll start you off. I know you, I walked with you once upon a dream..."
Heads turn, students snickering and jeering. Jaylin doesn't stop, her voice so sweet and timeless it's like she's the princess from the movie. We dance to the outdated melody, and the kids don't stop laughing. Jaylin doesn't seem to care, clearly at ease in the cruelty.
I glare at the crowd, fighting for my girl's honor the way any self-respecting man would. When the prince's part plays, I burst into song. Loudly.People gawk, jaws on the floor as my "succulent man-voice" rings through the deck. Jaylin glows, giggling as I twirl her. Heaven gives a slow clap, bringing a staccato of applause echoing after.
"But if I know you..."
"I know what you'll do..." Jaylin breaks in, and my heart flutters.
"You'll love me at once..." I sing, heat flushing my cheeks. A crescendo builds in my chest, the words so sweet I wish them true. I wish this really were a movie, with the cheesy duets and everything. I wish she were the princess and I were the prince.
"The way you did once..."
"Upon a dream," we finish. A hush falls over the room as the song winds to an end. And then Jaylin collapses laughing in my arms.
I dueted with my date. Dang, I really am a cliche, but I don't mind. Instead, I hug Jaylin, my muscles relaxing for the first time in a while.
