Chapter 11

December was a hell of a month. Just when I thought life was being good to me, it fucked harder. My best friend is fighting with cancer and I'm jobless. But I'm doing fine because hey I thrashed that slimy little bitchy boss of mine. The year is at its end which means New Year is about to begin. Alisha has been super depressed and so I'm spending my New Year's Eve with her at her room which smells of medicines and antiseptic lotion. And even if she wasn't depressed I would've still crashed at her doorstep. I've spent each and every New Year with her. Although those parties never appealed much and Alisha could never actually give me much of an attention in those parties which used to be full of her friends from different places. Sad part is she cannot party anymore. The operation went successfully a week ago, the tumour was safely removed; but according to the doctors the cancer still persist and new tumours are likely to be formed. She is usually tired and feels exceptionally drained. The combination of drugs are fluctuating her hormones which in turn is making her irritable, frustrated and super depressed.

"Hey" I wished as I entered her room. She was lying on her bed and scrolled through her phone's screen.

"Not even a single text" she hushed, to which I raised a brow in interrogation.

"One zero six contact numbers and nobody cares to message, not even him." She said.

By the way this 'him' is her recent former boyfriend Maddy.

"Don't worry I'm here and Aditya is on his way."I consoled. Aditya has been a real support through all this. I don't know about romance or relationships but I've found an amazing friend in him. We three spend most of the time together now.

"Hey ladies," he knocked and entered.

"To the most beautiful lady in this universe," he said and gave a rose to Alisha.

"Universe?" she laughed.

"Okay fine in this residential compound" he chuckled.

"Wow so flexible" I grinned.

"Ah I'm not beautiful. I look ugly." She sighed.

"You want makeup?" I teased.

"Yea so that I look like a bald mannequin" she laughed.

"You're beautiful Alisha" he said and caressed her cheek.

"I spent so much of time and energy towards my appearance back in office and this very man never gave me a compliment. And now when I barely move out of bed he finds me beautiful." she said with a sarcastic smile.

"Cancer perks!" I exclaimed. We all broke in a pit of laughter.

It was almost a quarter to midnight when I and Alisha were lying on the bed and Aditya relaxed on the couch beside the bed.

"Let's discuss New Year's resolutions" he blurted.

"Um okay yes let's start from you" I said.

"My New Year's resolution will be to travel as much as possible"

"Alisha your turn," he added.

"To be less busy," she blurted to which me and Aditya gave a complete confused look.

"O I'm always so busy being a cancer patient that I would like to give myself a break, you know" she said sarcastically and laughed.

"Come on your turn now Miss Alisha" he said and yes he still calls me Miss Alisha and I kind of like it.

Well honestly my New Year's resolution should be to seek a job as soon as possible. But I'm done being a dog to that bitch and I've kind of adopted this pre conceived notion that all bosses are douche except Aditya of course.

"I'm thinking of writing a novel" I said.

"Wow" both of them exclaimed.

"Will I be a part of it?" she queried.

"I'm thinking of writing a zombie apocalypse, you want to be a part of it?" I teased.

"Aditya please read me the story you started yesterday" she said and changed the subject.

He took the book from the shelf and rifled through the pages to find where he had last ended. And it gave me a weird feeling, that you know this world is nothing but a library and life is just like a book filled with the memories of family, friends, love, relationships, heartbreaks, passion, hatred and so much more. Everything we've done, are doing and will be doing is all getting jotted in the pages of our book. A few books become famous and are sold as autobiographies and some end up being lost in the library carrying infinite books. But the sad part is the author never gets a chance to read his own book once after its completion as then he leaves and the book rest in some shelf of the library stacked among the others.

He found the page and began reading: "So what if we aren't together anymore? So what if I don't get to touch her anymore? So what if she is married to someone else now? I love her. I water the tree of my love everyday with affection and honesty and if love is all about plucking that beautiful apple at the top of the tree then I may apologize because I won't be able to harm the stem to which it is attached in order to pluck it. That's not love for me. For me love is the root that holds supports and feed the apple yet never gets a chance to taste its sweetness. For me love is the stems that carry the weight of the apple yet never gives up. And for me love is the leaves that enhances the beauty of the apple yet never complains when the apple gets all the recognition. The nature is my inspiration of love, and it never encourages me to snatch but give."

As he read Alisha fell asleep. He stopped reading and kept the book aside. It was midnight now and the New Year had arrived. He reached out to my ear and whispered "Happy New year Miss Bose" I got up from the bed and sat beside him on the couch so as to not disturb Alisha's sleep. "Happy New Year" I smiled. We sat together and from the glass window we watched the soundless sky show of colourful crackers bursting one after another.

"I know there're people out there who're enjoying a very happening night but..." he hushed to which I interrupted

"...but ours is an epic night and an epic night should always end up with a kiss" I said and kissed him.
