A New Life

Welcome Aboard

When I learned that I had passed the test and gotten in to Star Fleet I was overjoyed to here the news. Me, Sela Rehu the first Romulan to join Star Fleet! It was incredible! A few years later I was promoted to lieutenant and I was looking for a transfer to a better more, important ship than the USS Hood. At the time the USS Enterprise-D was in orbit around Earth, just as I had been promoted, and they had an open position available. Well when I heard about that I jumped up and got myself transferred. Just two days later I got the news... I HAD BEEN TRANSFERRED TO THE ENTERPRISE!!! I was so happy. I packed up everything and got ready for my new position.

"Rehu to Enterprise. Ready to beam up."
"Everything is ready. Commander Ryker is waiting to meet you.", said a voice.
"Energize."

When I arrived there were two people waiting for me; Lt. Commander Data and Commander William Ryker. "Welcome aboard the Enterprise Lt. Rehu. I'm Commander Ryker. Nice to meet you."
"Thank you.", I said shaking his hand.
"Lt. Commander Data. I read your file before your arrival. It is interesting your chose a career in Star Fleet considering the prejudice towards Romulans."
"I knew what I was getting into when I signed up for Star Fleet."
"Of course", said Ryker "Follow me your quarters are this way. When you are ready please inform me and I will take you to the Captain. He would like to meet you."
"All I need to do is put my belongings in my quarters. I can unpack later."
A few minutes later I was in the turbo lift heading to the bridge.

"So what position was I assigned? They didn't tell me. They just said that I was on the bridge."
"You will be working at one of the science stations," said Ryker.
"Ah. That makes sense. My last post was similar."
"Of course."
"Sir I can't help but notice you seem uncomfortable."
"It's nothing. Just I'm slightly worried about the crew's reaction to you working here. Some of them have lost family to Romulans so they might not be to pleased with sharing a station with a Romulan."
"Understandable. I faces the same problem on the Hood. They got over it after a couple of weeks."
"Of course."
Just then the doors slid open. The expanse of the bridge became clear to me. Ryker walked off first. After taking a deep breath I followed and stepped onto the bridge.

At first no one noticed. Then Ryker introduced me to the captain. "Sir this is Lt. Sela Rehu. She just transferred from the USS Hood."
"Good morning sir," I said.
"Ah hello, said Picard extending his hand, welcome aboard the Enterprise"
"Thank you sir, I said shaking his hand, "I was glad to get this position. I am looking forward to serving with you."
"Yes, well your station is just up there. Data would you mind taking the Lt. up to her station?"
"Not at all sir."
"Welcome aboard the Enterprise. We are glad to have you here."
Data came over and walked me over to my station. He helped me set up then left me to do my job.

Later that evening...
When I got of duty I went down to medical for my physical. Doctor Crusher was waiting for me when I walked in. "Hello, I said, "I was told to come down once I got of duty."
"Come in. She said, take a seat right here." I sat down. "So according to your file you are a Romulan. Although I noticed that you do not have the usual ridges on your forehead. Are you only half Romulan?"
"No. Some Romulans don't have the ridges on our foreheads. It is normal. It isn't common knowledge however. Many of us are used as spies because we look like Vulcans."
"I see. Well all your vitals seem normal by your standards. You are free to leave."
"Thank you." On my way out I almost ran a young man over. "Sorry," I said.
"No I'm sorry. My name is Wesley. Wesley Crusher. What's yours?"
"Sela Rehu. I just transferred here today."
"Welcome aboard."
"Thank you."
Just then Dr.Crusher walked by.
"Ah I see you have met my son Wesley. He is going to be taking his test soon to join Star Fleet."
"Good luck", I said, "please excuse me. I need to go unpack."

In my quarters...
I started unpacking as soon as I got in. I packed my drawers with my extra uniform, casual clothes, and a pair of traditional pants, a shirt, and foot wear. Despite my dislike for my race's customs I still celebrated some of the holidays. I unpacked the few pieces of jewelry I have and set them on my dresser. I took out my sketchbook and set on the table.

After I had finished unpacking I decided to go down to rec room so that I could meet some of the crew members. I decided to wear my uniform, though I was off duty. I quickly checked myself in the mirror and fixed my hair. I always had problems with my hair. So I kept my hair kinda short. When I was satisfied with my appearance I walked out of my room and down to the rec room.

Tenforward...
There were a lot of people there when I arrived. I couldn't spot anyone I knew, so I walked over to a table and sat down. I scanned the room looking for someone else sitting alone. After a while looking I spotted someone sitting alone. I plucked up my courage and walked over. "Hello", I said, "Mind if I sit?"
"Not at all", she said.
"Hi. My name is Sela Rehu. What's yours?"
"Mare Seni. Nice to meet you. Are you new here? I don't remember seeing you before."
"Yes I am. I transferred here today. Used to be on the USS Hood."
"Excuse me for asking but are you the Sela Rehu who is a Romulan?"
"Yes... How do you know that? My file is 3rd level clearance. No one but the Captain and the the next two in command should be able to see my file."
"My file is also 3rd level clearance. So I can see yours as well."
"Where are you from?"
"Silvia. So my being in Star Fleet is kinda a secret."
"Ha. Funny. We are both kinda a secret."
"Yeah we are, aren't we?"
" Where do you work?" I asked.
"Engineering. You?"
"Bridge. Planet composition-atmosphere, rock or gas, type- and advising when dealing with Romulans."
"Interesting."
"What do you do in engineering?"
"Power regulations."
"Interesting position."
"Well how much do you know about Silvians?"
"Not much."
"Well we all have some kind of special ability, and I can control and create energy and electricity."
"That's incredible!"
"Well it comes in handy with my job."
"I bet it does."
"So, how are you liking the Enterprise?"
"Well this is my first day and I haven't met many people yet. But so far so good."
"Good. Excuse me, I have to go. I'm about to go on duty. See ya some other time."
"How about tomorrow? Same time?"
"Sure. Bye."
"Bye."

In my quarters...
I changed into my casual clothes and grabbed my sketchbook. I want to my suitcase and rummaged through it. "Damn it! I forgot my charcoal! Oh shit! I left all my drawing tools behind. I forgot I gave them away. I'll just have to get some new ones." I put my sketchbook back and decided to finish unpacking so I grabbed my pjs and put those in another drawer. I pulled out my Niera. It was a gift from my mother. One of the nicest things she ever did for me.-It was a stringed instrument. I love playing it. I didn't know any Romulan songs, in fact I couldn't even speak the language. I spent so little time on my home world that I have completely forgotten how to speak the language.- I set the instrument on the table by side my sketchbook. I took my mirror and hung it on the wall. I took my suitcase to my room and set it on the bed. I took out all my drawings and hung them on the walls. Once I was done unpacking I walked over to the computer and decided to look up Mare Seni. When I found her file I read through it. "Incredible!", I said. I looked at the file on Silvians. I found that I could already speak their language. I thought over this for a while and decided that I wanted to befriend this girl, and maybe go a bit further than just friends. I needed to learn everything I could about her.

Later that night...
I was laying in bed staring at the ceiling. I thought about everything that had happened today. I had learned so much in such a little time. I loved the Enterprise so far. The people I had met were so far were really nice. Although when I will soon see what they really think of me. "I wonder what people's reactions will be to meeting me?", I said to myself. Then I closed my eyes and went to sleep.

Months passed and the crew slowly go used to me. I befriended Mare and we spent more and more time together. After a time we became more than friends. We slowly fell in love with each other. We spent all of our free time together. We talked about our childhood and why we joined Star Fleet. I stayed on the bridge and our schedules changed. We ended up being on duty at the same time. I became a helpful asset on the bridge. I had experience with many different species and was a source of information for the Enterprise.

So this is my first time writing. Sorry if it isn't very good. Tell me what you thought. I want feed back. Go check out the next chapter of the story! It is way better then this chapter. In my opinion.
