Matt was a fast learner with a stake, his thing was that it was as easy as fighting with a knife. I found it incredibly annoying when I got a splinter from the stakes. Matt didn't seem to mind. However, he had pretty weak armor, so when Brendon easily put dents in his mask, we suggested using wolfsbane as armor.
"If you spray yourself with it Brendon might actually stay away." Matt looked at him and Brendon nodded in agreement. I sprayed Matt with the wolfsbane, noting that it had a strong smell that almost seemed to burn the air. Matt and Brendon circled one another and when Brendon charged he froze five feet away from Matt. His nose wrinkled up and he coughed, turning away from the smell. It must've been so strong I thought I saw his eyes water.
"I don't smell anything," Matt replied.
"You're not a werewolf," I reminded him.
Brendon threw up in the bushes. While he worked off the wolfsbane Matt and I practiced fighting. He kept pushing me around and I started to get annoyed until I rushed forward and smacked him in the face, delivering a blow to his abdomen.
"When you fight, you're too gentle," he pointed out. "You're soft. Toughen up and use your muscles."
"Easy," I said, jumping and delivering a kick to his face. He grabbed my ankle and picked me up, spinning me and then hurling me at the wooden fence. I groaned and landed on the grass, trying to catch my breath. Matt ran towards me with a silver knife and I ducked when he swung at my head. I hooked my leg around his ankles and dropped him to the ground, rolling over him and turning the knife to face him. He pushed and I felt his muscles strain but I pressed down on his chest with my knee and his hold on the knife loosened. I pressed it against his throat and then stood up, turning to wipe the sweat off my face with my T-shirt.
We went at it again until Brendon jumped back in, this time his claws extended. I backed away and let Matt take a shot. They moved rather quickly and I almost lost track of their moves until I heard a loud crack when Matt punched Brendon in the ribs. Luckily, he didn't need to take a long time to heal because he was going at it again.
I grabbed a stake and jumped back in, everyone against each other. I deflected Matt's blow and attempted to hit Brendon in the shoulder with the stake. I spun around them and then they were at each other's throats again. I was finally able to get Brendon in the thigh and he wavered, giving Matt the opportunity to strike. I came up behind Matt and jumped up, hitting him in the small of his back.
Finally, it was Brendon pointing his claws at both me and Matt, their pointy tips grazing our necks. Matt had his knife above Brendon's head and my stake was positioned above his chest. We were all breathing heavily until Brendon took back his claws and we all collapsed to the ground.
"Psst."
I opened my eyes again and saw Beebee looking down at me from above the wooden fence. She waved. My eyes widened and I lifted a hand to shoo her away but Brendon saw her and he was up on his feet, yanking the stake out of my hand. I shot up to my feet and grabbed Brendon's arm.
"No!" I yelled. "Not in broad daylight!"
"She's not even supposed to be in the daylight!" Brendon shook me off and climbed over the fence. Beebee was already moving away, and then she took off. Brendon snarled and ran after her.
"Who the hell is that?" Matt asked, dumbfounded.
"A vampire," I said. "Remember when I told you they can walk in the sun because of my blood? This is what I mean."
His eyes widened in question but I pushed past him and into the house. I grabbed a stake and then took off running through the front door. I could hear shouts and complaints from down the street. I pushed myself to run and tucked my stake into my back pocket. I saw Brendon running over people's rooftops. Beebee was all the way on the other side, spinning on her heels, laughing in Brendon's face. He jumped from the roof of the last house and did a twirl before he landed safely. Then he took off after Beebee. I hurried after him and then my phone began to ring.
