"What is this?" Remus asked, voice full of false curiosity. He held up a muggle's chess piece. It was the black Rook. Duh. He had made sure to act surprised when a pure white owl dropped the little package on his lap during breakfast.
And throughout the day, Remus kept receiving Muggle chess pieces. First two Rooks, then two Knights, two Bishops, then the King, the Queen, and finally all the black Pawns, one by one, every hour. Happily, Remus created his own Muggle chess board. He did, however, have some very close calls with the various owls that delivered his packages. One eagle owl almost took his ear off as it landed on his chair.
"That's not fair," James complained, "it looks like you got off easy and we were abused to no end by these hooligans." Remus chuckled quietly at the thought of the expressions on the girls' faces if they heard that James had called them hooligans. Remus didn't reply to any of James' s and Sirius's and Peter's complaints all day because he knew it was going to be OK because he was the good child and the inside man and James Bond.
But in the final hour, Remus opened his little gift to find a white Pawn. A singular white Pawn. One. White. Pawn. Remus sat in his bed in Gryffindor Tower and stared at this chess piece that was mocking him with its existence. Angrily, Remus stomped over to his Muggle chess board and slammed the little Pawn onto its square, making the other boys jump.
"Do you see this?!" Remus exclaimed, pointing to the piece sitting by itself on the right side of the board. "This is outrageous!"
"Ha, OCD," James grinned as Remus sat on his bed and stared at the lone Pawn, almost pulling his hair out.
