"Bro, Carter, you ready for the game tomorrow?" My roommate and teammate, Decarlos, asked me as he barged into our dorm room.
I sighed and closed my laptop because I clearly was not going to get much studying done while he was in the room. Carlos was great, I loved him as if he was my own brother, but with brotherhood came obnoxiousness and Carlos had plenty of that. Carlos was one of those guys that would always find a way to have fun and barely took anything seriously. He was the reason I got drunk at my very first frat party I went to, but that was a story for another time and besides, it would never happen again.
Normally, after practice, Carlos would wander off somewhere and I would leave me to my studies, but he was back earlier than usual.
"I'm never really ready for a game, but I'm as ready as I'll ever be." I breathed deeply.
I was the type of athlete that did not want to talk or even think about the big game until I was moments away from playing in it. I was not nervous right now, neither was I scared of playing against the rivalry team. However, I knew all that would change once I actually stepped onto the soccer field tomorrow. My nerves would be all over the place. I could imagine it now.
"I don't even know why you always tripping. You're one of the best players on the team." Carlos snickered, plopping down on his bed. He laid down on his back and propped his arms behind his head. "Aye, didn't you say your brother was flying out tomorrow?"
"Yeah." I smiled, nodding my head. "Him, his wife, and my nephew."
Besides my father, my brother and Aniya were the closest family I had. Of course I had other family, but my immediate family was always there for me when I needed them. I always got happy when I thought about them; I really missed them and I couldn't wait until they came to Maryland tomorrow. It had been too long since I had seen them and they would help take some of the pressure off.
"So, I finally get to meet Hunter." He chuckled, speaking with much enthusiasm.
"Oh yeah dude," I smirked, "he's gonna love you. He's gonna hate you, too, because you're annoying."
"I'm not annoying." He scoffed, laughing.
"Just a bit." I chuckled.
"Whatever." He shook his head. "Is your dad comin' too?"
"Nah man, he has work and stuff." I said quietly.
My dad was there for me financially throughout my childhood and he tried to be there for me mentally, but now that I was older I realized a couple of things. I also found out that he cheated on my mother—which I did not take very lightly—but I had to forgive him because he was my father and my mother was no longer living. After my mother died, he was more distant than ever. It was completely disappointing because my mother would not have wanted that for our family. She would have wanted for everyone to continue working our problems out with each other. We still got together on holidays and called each other on the phone, but to me, my father was just floating through the rest of his life. He just wasn't what one would call a decent person.
"Oh, sorry." He said after a moment.
Carlos was my closest and dearest friend that I had made at my time here in university, but there was some things that I had not told him yet. It was not that I did not trust him, but I did not want him to pity me. I told him that I lost my mother from cancer and he never even talked about his mother again. I guess he thought that I would feel depressed. I never mourned over my mother's death anymore. There was not a day that went by when I did not think of my mother and how I wished she was still living, but I was not sad. The fact that she passed away on my birthday would forever be sad to me, but I had to live on. The only thing left of her was memories, the good ones. If I told Carlos the whole ordeal with my father, then I could imagine how he would act and I didn't want that.
"It's cool, man." I shrugged my shoulders and then smiled slyly. "So, are you gonna let me study, or are you gonna talk my ear off?"
"I'ma let your smart ass study." He rolled his eyes. "I'm about to take a nap."
"Good." I chuckled.
As soon as I grabbed my laptop and opened it up to start studying, there was a loud knock on the door. I agitatedly groaned and slammed my laptop shut once again.
"What now?" I murmured to myself, making my way towards the door. I stopped midway and turned to face my best friend. "You expecting somebody?"
"Nah." He shrugged his shoulders and got off his bed to walk behind me on my way to the door.
"I wonder who it is, then." I sighed, swinging the door open.
It happened to be a bunch of guys we met from the gym not too long ago. They also had a few girls with them. We befriended them, after they invited us to that first fraternity party I got drunk at. The guys were chill, but I knew what they were here for and I frankly did not want to go through that again. I needed to start studying or I was going to fail my exam that was coming up soon. It was Friday and there were probably more than enough parties on campus. I was wondering why they had to come bother us.
"What's up, guys." Carlos nodded his head.
"What's up, man. You guys wanna come to a little party in building C." One of the guys, Charlie, said.
"Um." Carlos looked between the guys and I. "I don't know, man."
"Come on." Charlie tried persuading us. "We got girls."
Carlos and I glanced at the girls standing beside the group of guys. It was three of them, all very beautiful in their own way, but they were not my type. For one, the girl with the blonde hair was dressed in a skimpy skirt and belly shirt, which screamed too flashy. The brunette had on leggings, which wasn't that bad, but she also had on a shirt that looked like it could be a bra, as well. The third one was a hot mess. So, in other words, I was not going to a party just because of a few 'hot' girls at my door. They weren't really my type anyway.
"Bro, Carlos, you can go. Just remember we have a very important game tomorrow." I seriously told him. "Don't get drunk."
"You know what guys, we're just gonna have to past this one up." Carlos shrugged his shoulders. "Sorry."
"Yeah, it's whatever." Charlie said and started to walk away, his group of friends following closely behind him. Carlos closed the door and returned to his bed.
"You owe me for skipping that party." He pointed at me.
"I don't owe you anything. Be glad you didn't go." I snickered. "You could've got drunk and that would've been all bad."
"Just study for whatever it is you gotta study for." He threw one of his pillows at me and I dodged it.
"Will do." I grabbed his pillow and threw it at him. He had his eyes close, so it hit him right in the face.
I grabbed my laptop again and I finally sighed in content because I would actually get some study time in.

So, this is the first chapter of Carter's story, I hoped you guys enjoyed it.
The first chapter is basically giving an insight on Carter's college life, so I won't have to do it later on in the story.
This story won't only be in Carter's point of view, but most chapters will probably be.
