Chapter 10

"You guys really need to stop singing songs for each other and get back together!" Angela said. She stomped up to us backstage with her hands on her hips and glared up at us. Kyle threw an arm around my shoulders and pulled me into his chest, a goofy grin plastered on his face.

"We are back together!" he exclaimed excitedly.

"Oh em gee, really? That's great!" Angela squealed jumping up and down while clapping her hands. Sweet jesus.

"What are you talking about?" I growled to Kyle. He stared down at me confusedly. "I... I never agreed to going out with you again!"

"But you--"

"You're imagining things!" I cried. I squirmed out of his grasp and ran back into the audience like hell. To think that I'd almost gotten back with Kyle...

"Don't go after her, Ky. Just give her time to cool off," Angela said as I escaped. Thank god for her.

I was such a coward to run away from what I couldn't bear to think about. I was always a coward. I would always be a coward. I couldn't even talk to people that wanted to invite me into their family. Hot tears streamed down my face and dripped down my chin. After mindlessly wandering around the school's campus for what seemed like hours, I realized that I was lost.

Damn this school and everyone in it.

At some point, I had strayed outside. I hugged my arms to my chest and followed the empty, eerily dark hallways and alternated between left and right at every possible turn. My legs walked on their own, leading me to a dead end.

"Why is there a dead end hallway anyway?" I angrily asked the wall in front of me. I turned around to stomp away, but a large body blocked my way. I thought I had spun around in a circle and ran into the wall I was talking to - that's how hard the person's chest was.

"Um, sorry," I muttered. I tried to step to the left, but the hard-chested - oh sweet jesus, abs - person mirrored my action to block my path again.

They pushed me against the wall and held me there by my shoulders with firm hands. His grip was like an iron clamp digging into my bones. "You're not going anywhere," growled the bear-like person. Their voice was deep and gruff. My nose cringed at their hot, rank breath hitting my nostrils.

"I suggest you start using toothpaste, buddy," I said. I was submitted to torture when they heavily sighed on my face. "And some mouthwash!" I gasped. I slapped a hand to my face to cover my nose, but the stench seeped between my fingers.

"Enough about my breath! Tell me why you made that video!"

"What? I never made a video, so you better get your paws off of me!" I yelled. With clenched fists, I shoved the guy - I figured he was a guy - in the chest with all the strength I could muster, but they didn't move a centimeter. "Are you on steroids or something? God, it's not good for your little buddy down there, y'know!"

"I'm not on steroids, dammit! Tell me why you made the video!"

"I don't know who you are! And I didn't make what video you're talking about!"

"It's Kyle, you idiot!"

"K-kyle? I never knew you had such a lovely chest. I mean, your abs are--"

"What?"

"Um, I-I mean, uh, h-hi?" I stuttered.

"Marissa?" asked Kyle. He released my shoulders and squinted at my face.

"Who did you think I was, Chuck Norris??" I screamed, throwing my fists into the air. My left fist accidentally smacked into Kyle's chin on the way up. He quickly stepped backwards as my jaw dropped to the floor. I just punched a guy - and Kyle, nonetheless.

"Oh god, I'm so sorry!" I cried out, reaching for the side of his jaw that he was rubbing with a shocked expression on his face. "I've bruised your beautiful face!"

"My beautiful face?" Kyle repeated.

"Ignore me! Aw, you aren't bleeding, are you? I still can't believe I punched you! It was an accident, oh my god."

He slapped my hands away and smiled down at me. "I'm fine, okay? Don't worry."

"I just--"

"Shut up."

"I-I'm sorry! I didn't mean to punch you and-- I should stop."

He shook his head laughing and casually threw his right arm around my shoulders, which I didn't shrug off. "You never know when to stop talking, do you?"

We began walking in what I hoped to be the right direction back to the dorms. I wasn't sure at all, but I trusted Kyle for some strange, out-of-this-world reason.

"So... My chest is lovely and my face is beautiful?" he jokingly asked.

I playfully punched his chest and leaned into him. Maybe it isn't such a strange reason after all.
