Because of You

Chapter 1:

I was walking in the rain, my clothes plastered to my skin. The soft drumming of the rain on my cotton hood keeping me at a steady pace. My short, midnight black hair was getting frizzy, and my dark tan skin was covered with goosebumps.

A car whizzed past my position, and a wave of water from the curb splashed against me, soaking me further, causing me to break out in cold shivers. I could hear chuckles from bystanders waiting at the bus stop, and I glared at all of them. They quickly shut up, and made way for me as I waited for the 55 bus to come along with them. The bus pulled up, and a short line formed as the doors swung open.

"Now what do you think you're doing??" the bus driver demanded.

"Taking a seat..." I mumbled.

"No, you aren't!! Your dripping wet!!" he angrily exclaimed. Why does this bus driver always find an excuse to not let me on the bus?

"Thank you for stating the obvious," I rolled my eyes and inserted my money so I would HAVE to stay on.

"You can stay on... But you're NOT sitting on my seats!!" he waved me off, and I walked to the back of the bus, leaving puddles on the floor with every step. My Vans squeaked with every step, and let a pond form around me at my stand in the back of the bus.

A boy about my age slipped in the puddles I had made all the way to the back of the bus. He sat behind me and snickered at my wet sight, for he was perfectly dry aside from a few drops of water splattered on his sweatshirt. Curse his umbrella.

"If I hear one more snicker from you, you gon' be laughin' toothless," I hissed without meeting his eyes.

"If it means laughing at you, then I'd be glad to let you," he countered with a laugh. His voice reminded me of one that I had most definately heard before.

I whirled around, ready with a snide comeback, but my words fell short when I saw his face. This laughing jerk was my neighbor, Sean. His best friend was my neighbor on the other side of my house, Ryan.

"It's you..." I glared. He had known it was me the whole time and was enjoying taking in the sight of me, Issa, soaked to the core.

"Marissa," he smiled, looking like he was glad to see me.

"Sean," I coldly said, turning back to the front of the bus.

"Oh, there goes Angela," I mumbled to myself, watching my sister walking with my parents towards our house.

The bus suddenly braked, but it didn't help against the slippery street. My dad and sister weren't paying attention to the road and stepped out to cross the street. Mom shouted after them, but Dad Is nearly deaf and Angela was listenening to her iPod. From within the bus, a loud scream erupted from my throat as the bus hit them.

-1 Year Later-

I walked through the cemetery, knowing where Dad and Angela were. I made my way through the mounds of earth, making sure not to step on anyone. I sat on the soft grass in between Dad's and Angela's headstones. Mom and Dad shared a headstone, but Mom's date of death had yet to be filled in. But she was there. Right next to Dad, close to Angela. All they were missing was me. Mom had died from a heart attack a few months after the bus accident, and I was left with a big house, my dad's business, and a large sum of money in the bank.

I hadn't moved homes, and I had just gotten accepted into the boarding high school an hour away with Ryan and Sean. It was school rules to go home every weekend, but what did I have to go home to? All I did was pay the bills and sulk.
