The vibe about the dance competition was very high around the whole school. Everyone, whether known or unknown to ballet, was excited about the show that was going to be held tomorrow. Busy practicing their steps again and again, the dancers had quite forgotten the world around them. It felt like someone had sprinkled star dust in the atmosphere and everyone walked around in a magical aura.

Every afternoon, I had run to the ballet halls to see her wandering somewhere in between the notes of music. Twirling and swirling on the crystal floors, she had swayed around in filtering sunlight and I was a witness of her love for dance. The school might be excited for this competition but no one knew the height of my yearning for this day. I felt like I had waited a thousand years for it. I so wanted her to glorify the stage tomorrow..just like she had glorified my life.

I had submitted my entry for the Photography Contest long ago and now, just like every other participant, I was waiting for that blessed call for the interview that was supposed to go to the winner only. I wasn't waiting for it like it would come for me, I was just waiting for it in general because the suspense was killing me. I wanted to get over with the results as soon as possible.

We had instructions from the Principal that the call would be sudden and we were supposed to be prepared for it. I didn't know what she meant by 'prepared' but I guess I was somehow ready for it. I had braced myself for any kind of news, whether good or bad.

I remember it was 8 at night and I was pressing my suit for the tomorrow's grand show. My dorm mates were teasing me about Faye and I was smiling in a very silly way over their words and laughters. Everyone knew how much I had waited for this day and finally it had arrived. I knew that I hadn't even said a 'hello' to her and she didn't even know that I had been a silent audience to her afternoon pirouettes but still...I wanted to be there for her.

Hanging the suit in my cupboard, I sat on my bed and looked around at the wall adorned with her photographs

Hanging the suit in my cupboard, I sat on my bed and looked around at the wall adorned with her photographs. It was funny that all the other dorm boys had posters of rocking bands on their walls while mine displayed a collage of the bits and pieces of the most beautiful memories I ever had in my life.

Just as I was about to lay down for a while, the phone in the corridor rung and someone picked it up. My eyes were closed when someone called my name and I got up tiredly to talk to my mom who called every Saturday. Shuffling down the corridor, I reached the phone and held the receiver to my ear. A moment after, it was hanging down in air as the cord stretched and unstretched in a strange rhythm. The happiest news of my life had arrived at the most wrong time and I felt nothing but...numb.

I was invited for the interview tomorrow
