It had been a few days since his operation. Dipper had finally been discharged from hospital. Mabel's crazy, excitable nature hadn't helped things. How would you feel if you hadn't eaten in six whole days, just been hauled back from the brink of death and brimming with lethargy, just to be greeted by an exuberant, lunatic of a sister? The obvious answer is you wouldn't feel great.
Well, this is the unfortunate fate that befell the preteen as he left the hospital.
Not the best welcome ever.

Something continually ate away at Dipper's mind. The hunger was almost unbearable. But he continued on as normal as he could in this weakened state.
Later on that evening, the Pines twins sat in the living room in silence.
Some dull new programme ran in background. Mabel was busy knitting a new sweater as well as rambling aimlessly about pointless and irrelevant topics. On the other hand, her brother was drawn into a tight ball in the arm chair, plagued by the agony of hunger.
The TV blazed on in the background.

"So what can you tell us about the feeding habits of ghouls, professor?"
"Ghouls feed off of human corpses by killing their target and devouring the remains. Usually, one human is enough to last one ghoul a whole month, but there have been reports of a binge eater who kills excessively."

Dipper perked up upon hearing this. Pacifica was the binge eater.
But wasn't she dead?
Regardless he listened.

"Is it possible for ghouls to sustain themselves on our diet?"
"Unfortunately not. When ghouls eat human food, it irritates their insides, causing extreme digestive upset and in the worst case scenario even death. To a ghoul, our food not only is dangerous to them but also leaves a nasty ash taste on their tongues."

That last comment made Dipper wretch. "No...no way..." He muttered under his breath. Mabel caught the look of paranoia etched into her sibling's features. "Yo Dip y'all okay?"
He said nothing to answer. Instead he near enough sprinted into the kitchen. Then set about leafing through all the cupboards, violently forcing food into his body. Vile tastes struck him hard. But he persisted, laying his eyes upon a hamburger steak. His favourite. Out of desperation the panicked child tore the polythene wrapping off the burger steak and took a large bite. Tears streamed down Dipper's face. This only confirmed what the professor on the TV had said.

As a last resort, the tween dashed to the bathroom to stare at his own reflection. Upon arrival he slammed the rickety door shut. What he saw in the mirror startled him. His left eye was glazed over obsidian black with a deep cerise iris staring him back in the face. Dipper brought his hand to it in fear. For a split second - though most likely a hallucination - he noticed Pacifica standing behind him with a malevolent glint in her eyes.
Mabel rapped on the door. "Dipper what's going on?! You're acting weirder than usual!"
He gulped. Dipper blanked his sister and instead focused on his face.
Panic set in.
He was a ghoul, but he wasn't he was human!
But he was a hungry ghoul at that.
And what could be more enticing than the scent of a sweet, edible meat to a hungry ghoul?
Nothing.
And Dipper knew that it was food.
His hunger took over.
Human judgement was gone.
Ghoul instincts in their place.
Dipper felt compelled to follow them.
