He’d been sitting about half an hour, with his phone in his hand since a mass of people were texting him, asking him if he was Okay. He went on facebook on his phone and started hitting the buttons, knitting together to make a status that read: Cassie Jenkins, you’re my life. I know you’re not by my side but I know you went back to where you came from, heaven; because you’re an angel. I need you here and I really can’t say that you’re in a better place because I need you in my arms. That was when I was in my ‘better place’. I miss your smile and your eyes and everything about you because no matter what you say, you are the most amazing and beautiful girl on the face of the planet. Wait for me in heaven baby girl? R.I.P Cassie, my love<3
In five minutes, he had 48 notifications, all for comments on his status. All were saying, ‘Are you okay?’, ‘Stay strong’, you know, all the usual stuff. Then I remembered, Skye. Her laptop was broken and her phone doesn’t have free internet. Does she know yet? I remembered what Alisikaa said, ‘close your eyes and think of what you want and you’ll be where you need to be.’
I kissed Jake on the cheek closed my eyes, chanting Skye in my head. I opened my eyes slowly one-by-one, I was in Skye’s room. It worked. She looked like her normal self, happy and cheerful, she hasn’t been told yet. But soon, she would be told because I heard her dad in a low voice saying, ‘Okay Mrs Woods, I-I’ll tell her now.’ The phone went down in a matter of seconds. There was a mumble of Skye’s dad and then a woman’s voice answering.
There was the sound of two sets of footsteps coming up the stairs. Her door opened and in the doorway stood her mum and dad, looking remorseful. “Hey,” Skye said before studying their faces. She took out her earphones and stood up. “What’s wrong?”
“Well...” Her mum and dad exchanged looks.
“It’s- Cassie,” Her mum continued.
“She was in a car crash...”
“What! Is she okay? Where is she?” Skye panicked.
“She was with Jake and she told him...”
“...To tell you that she loves you and that you’re the best friend that she’s ever had.”
“But wait,” Skye choked on the tears she was holding back. “She’s alright isn’t she?” She looked at her parents for reassurance but their faces were as grim as ever.
“I’m sorry Skye,” Her mum dropped her head.
“No. No. No!” Skye cried, staring at her dad with tears in her eyes. Her dad pulled her close as she cried, her mum putting her arms around both of them, giving her more support. She cried loudly for almost ten minutes, which made my heart crack just a little more.
“Skye hunny, it’ll be okay, we’re here. Jake’s going through the same thing, I’m sure you two can relate,” Skye’s mum finally said.
“No mum. No it won’t. It will never be the same.” Skye fell down on her bed and pulled the teddy I bought her for her birthday in and cuddled it, its fur changing colour.
Her mum kissed her on the forehead and went out the door to let her cry. I sat with her and hugged her. I spent the next hour with Skye as she cried. Then I remembered that Alisikaa had wanted me to meet her.
I closed my eyes as tears wet my cheeks. I soon appeared in a cosy – what looked to be – cave?
