Agni Pariksha - A trial by fire conducted in the Ramayana to test Goddess Sita's virtue after her time in Lanka as a captive to Raavanan.

Alta - A mixture of vermillion and water, which the bride has to step into before walking into the house. This will mark the day the bride enters her marital home.

Ayodhya - An ancient city in India, also known as Saket. It is believed to be the birthplace of Lord Rama, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu in the Dashavatar. It is also mentioned in the poem, The Ramayana, a tale about Lord Ram and his wife Sita.

Benarasi - A term used to refer to someone who lives in Benares, better known as Varanasi. It is home to the Golden Temple, otherwise known as Kashi Vishwanath - dedicated to Lord Shiva.

Beti - A term to call daughters in Hindi

Dadi (F)/ Dada (M) - Terms used to refer to paternal grandparents in Hindi

Dharma - A duty to the principals and family values

Haveli - A mansion

Kalaash - A silver pot of rice, usually set at the entrance of the groom's house, for the bride to knock over with her right foot as she enters her new home for the first time.

Kashmiri - A term used to refer to someone who lives in Kashmir, North India.

Kurta - A long shirt/top worn usually by men.

Lehenga - A short blouse and skirt combination, usually embroidered heavily and worn on special occasions like weddings.

Nani (F)/ Nana (M) - Terms used to refer to maternal grandparents in Hindi

Pokhara - The second largest city in Nepal, west of Kathmandu (the capital city)

Raavanan - The demon who abducted Sita in the Ramayana, after falling deeply in love with her upon sight.

Rishta - A marriage proposal

River Ganges - A holy river where people take baths as part of prayers and funeral rites.

Sadhu - A holy sage who has relinquished all desires, material and physical, in life to attain peace and enlightenment.

Saat Pheras - According to Hindu traditions, seven vows are to be made between a man and woman as they complete all the rituals to get married. The couple walks around the fire, representing the fire god as a witness to their vows.

Sherwani - A long garment that looks like a richly embroidered coat, worn by men usually with dhotis (baggy pants) or well-fitted silk/cotton pants.
