The weight of her words pressed on the pair for quite a while. To Ronnie, it explained why he needed to be with Lulu so badly. He looked up at her face and was surprised to see her looking back, surprised to see that all of her walls were down, and that there was love in her eyes.

“Soul mate?” Lulu whispered, quickly looking away, her cheeks turning pink. Ronnie purred in response, draping his foreleg across her thighs, and he nuzzled her stomach gently. Her fingers combed through his fur, slow and thoughtful. “That... That doesn’t explain why they wanted me, though...”

Madame Camille shook her head and sighed. “I don’t know why, either, Miss Hayes,” she replied, “but I’m assuming it’s to do with your supernatural talents, whatever they may be.”

“But I don’t have... I mean, I haven’t exactly shown signs of any... Talents. Supernatural or otherwise.” Lulu’s voice was choked with tears, making Ronnie’s fur bristle.

“I’m sorry I can’t be of much more help, Miss Hayes,” Madame Camille said softly. She touched the back of Lulu’s hand, sending a shiver through her body. Camille stood, inclined her head as a silent farewell, then glided out of the room. Ronnie watched her go, then turned his head up to look at Lulu. Tears were rolling down her cheeks, dripping off her chin and disappearing into his fur. A low purr emanated from Ronnie’s throat, and Lulu leaned over, burying her face in his fur. He could feel her body shaking as she sobbed, and all he could do was purr louder, in an attempt to relax her.

They spent the remainder of the day in the hospital wing, and all of the next day, and the next. Lulu needed to bring up her strength, and Ronnie refused to leave her side. On the third day of their stay, Ronnie’s form had turned back to human, and he was only dressed in his boxers; His other clothing had gotten torn up during his change.  Skylar and Lily had been to visit them, bringing assignments and desserts from dinner. Lulu hadn’t spoken much since Madame Camille’s visit, just nodded and gave empty smiles when spoken to.

The night of their third day, the nurses pronounced Lulu strong enough to leave, if she wished. She did. As she pulled on clothes, brought earlier on by Lily, Ronnie watched her carefully for any sign of weakness from her. She flattened her hands down her clean shirt, then looked up at him, catching him staring. She blushed and looked away quickly. Ronnie moved closer to her side, and saw her eyes flicker to his bare abdomen and away quickly.

“We should go,” she said quietly, for the first time in days, before Ronnie could speak. Ronnie shrugged one shoulder half casually. He reached for her hand, but as soon as his fingers touched her skin, she walked quickly for the door, balling both her hands into fists. Ronnie winced, his chest closing in around his heart, and followed her. Again with her rejection. She shouldn't be rejecting him now. After all, Madame Camille said they were soul mates. Clearly, she didn’t believe that.

Ronnie followed behind her, staying close, focusing on any sign of weakness from her. Lulu walked with the usual stubbornness she had carried when he first seen her, with her head held high. That was the Lulu he loved, right there.

As they went along, snickers came from the stray students in the halls who were skipping their classes. Their snickers were directed at Ronnie’s clothing, or lack of. He just shrugged it all off, not worried about his image. Right now, he was focused on Lulu. The way she sped up when he tried to walk beside her, however, suggested she wanted nothing to do with him. After all he did for her, she was still inconsiderate enough to just return to ignoring him. What a bitch.

“Oooooh, Ronnieeeee!” a familiar voice called, half mocking. “I’m loving those boxers! Taz looks great on your ass!” Lulu’s shoulders visibly tensed at the cat call, and Ronnie turned his head to see Vermilion skip to his side.
