Chapter 23

The five of us were quiet as we stared at my phone in the center of the table, waiting for the next tasks. Jake and Flynn wanted to help me and Logan plan to complete all the ten tasks. They wanted us to survive and beat Death by Death.

Someone at the table cleared their throat. I looked up, but everyone was staring at the cell.

Rob messaged me to expect the next ransom sometime this week, but all we could do was worry. What if the ninth one was the one we die or fail?

That was when something in my memory triggered.

After Logan and I completed the previous tasks, Rob said the next one was going to have a twist.

That either meant it could be a twist that would throw us off or the twist could make the task impossible.

"Fin?" Logan asked, making me look at him. "What are you thinking about now?

"Remember how the next task will have a twist?" I asked him, to which he nodded. "That."

"I was thinking of that too," Logan said. "That's all I've been thinking of."

"Don't think about it," Lilly said. "Just think about how awesome your life will be once all this is over."

I looked down at my hands with a frown on my face. "I wish I could. Instead, I'm worrying about us dying."

"Yeah," Logan agreed. "I never thought about it before but now, since we're so close to finishing, it's all I think about."

"Just live in the moment," Lilly suggested.

"But what if this is our last moment?" I asked, looking at Lilly.

Flynn stood up from the table and walked into our living room without a single word. Sometimes I worried about him. He already lost his parents. What will happen if he loses the only sister he ever had?

"I wish there was something I could do to make you two feel better," Lilly said with a sigh. "Death by Death is ruining you. You used to be so happy and upbeat, Infinity."

I gave Lilly a thankful smile, but it felt sad as well.

"Luckily Logan didn't tell our parents about it," Jake said. "Otherwise, they'd be freaking out a whole lot. They have no idea what's going on."

"There has to be something we could do to guarantee our survival," Logan said. "There has to be some way out."

       "Like a loop-hole?" Jake asked.

       "Exactly," Logan said.

"Too bad Death by Death doesn't have any loopholes," Lilly said. "Trust me, I tried thinking about all of them."

Logan sighed. "Well, I'm bored," he said as he reached for my phone.

"What are you doing?" I asked.

Logan looked at me. "Why? Have any secrets?"

"No," I said. "I would like to know why you have my phone, though."

"Because I'm bored and mine is dead."

"Then change your phone," I said.

"It is charging," he said. "But it's all the way upstairs."
