Your POV

You knew you shouldn't have told him about those rumors. The rumors that had been circulating throughout the mountain for months that Kili, your loving husband, wasn't actually dead. He had not made an appearance since the Battle of the Five Armies, a year ago. During the battle, Bolg, the son of Azog the Defiler, had thrown him from Raven's Point, the impact cracking his spine and paralyzing him from the waist down. It had taken the better part of the year just for him to be able to move his legs, let alone stand or walk. While the two of you had fantasized that one day, he would make a full recovery and all would be as it had been before he left you in the Blue Mountains, you knew in your heart that it was not to be. Even though Kili always seemed to carefree when he was around the former Company members, he was not as confident as he acted. You knew that. And that was why he had not left the private section of the mountain. He was ashamed of what he had been reduced to, even though Oin had worked hard to fashion a chair fit with wheels so that he might push himself around. Instead, he opted to take the long, risky, and painful road back to full recovery–or as close as he could get to it. So while he worked at that, the kingdom was under the illusion that he was dead.

However, all of that changed when rumors spread like wildfire throughout the kingdom of Erebor and even out to Dale that the younger prince still lived, deformed and shut up in some secret corner of the mountain. No one were not sure what exactly had started those rumors to begin with, not even the maids who cleaned the royal chambers were privy to the fact that Kili lived. Instead, the Company, along with you and Dis, took turns cleaning Kili's chambers ourselves. Perhaps someone was spying on you. Or perhaps the rumors were all speculation because you had turned down the advances of several well-off dwarves of the past year, opting to remain a 'widow'.

You knew it was a mistake the moment the words left your mouth in Kili's presence. The dwarf perked instantly.

"If enough people suspect that I am alive, a spy will eventually confirm their suspicions and I will be put to shame in front of the entire kingdom!"

"No, Kili–"

"I am going to get better now. I'll double the time I'm working on regaining my strength. Help me up now, I want to walk."

"Kili! You're not nearly strong enough!"

"I am too! My legs can lift the weight of both Fili and uncle so they can hold me up!"

"Even if they could, you wouldn't have the balance to!"

"Belinda, if you don't help me stand up right now, I will do it myself." The defiant look in his eye told you that he was serious about this threat. In the few minutes it would take you to find someone strong enough to confine him to his bed, he could seriously hurt himself. You knew that you had no choice and so did he. As stubborn as you were, you weren't willing to take that chance.

"Fine. But as soon as I think you've had enough, you're sitting back down."

"Deal!" He reached for you from the sofa by the fireplace. You reached hesitantly towards him but as soon as he could, he snatched your forearms and pulled hard, giving you no choice but to match his force. Even though he was only trying to stand, you could see the strain by the vein in his forehead.

"Kili–"

"No!" He pulled harder, surprising you for a moment before you recovered and pulled him up the rest of the way. Once he was back on his feet, you realized that you would actually have to look up to meet his gaze.

"That wasn't so hard now, was it? It's good to be the tall one again."

"All I need to do is put on my favorite lifts."
