Chapter 4- Tough Call

Chases p.o.v:
It was a normal day untill the un-thinkable happened. Today was meant to be my first day on Squad but due to a mess up with the paperwork I still have to work on ambo for ome more shift. I woke up at 06:00 as per usual and had a quick shower before I headed for the firehouse, its become my normal routine to have breakfast and the firehouse. Once I arrived at the firehouse I headed straight for the locker room so I could change into my uniform before betting something to eat. It wasnt long into the shift when we got our first call,'Truck 81, Squad 3, Engine 51, Ambulance 61 and 67, warehouse fire west corner near lake Michigan 25th and 6th, other units responding', this was the call that would make or break a persons future. We all ran to our vehicles and a top speed, lights and sirens blazing, heading to the scene. When we arrived the sight in front of us was horific, not 1 but 2 warehouses were on fire and had structual damage.

Chief's p.o.v:
I got out of my car and started to give orders to my men," These buildings arent going to be standing much longer, so we have to act fast. Sqaud 3 I want you to team up with Truck 81 and help other units with a quick primary search, but the minutes and I mean the MINUTE I say get outnof there you do is that clear?!", "Yes Chief, everyone mask up!"both Lieutenants responded. With that my men headed inside. A few minutes later 2 groups came out of the building carrying 4 bodies in total.

Rileys p.o.v:
"Guys put him down in here" I said to the guys who were carrying a young boy. I quickly assessed him and saw that I had to intubate him or he would die. "Chase! We need to tube him hand my the kit!" He hands me the airways kit and helps me get the boy tubed. I check his breathes with the stethoscope,"Its in, lets get him to Med!" We load him into the ambulance and I shut the doors and hop in the drivers seat. I pull away from the scene, lights and sirens roaring and speed away to Chicago Med. "Hows he doing?" I say to Chase who is in back with the boy. "Hes getting worse how far out are we?" "Pulling in now. I get out and help Chases unload the patient we rush him in and hand him ober to the doctors and nurses. We start doing the paper work when Maggie come out with our gourney. I ask, "Hows he doing?" " He stable, looks like hes going to pull through thanks to you guys!" With that she turns away and leaves. "Main to 61?" "This is 61, come in main" "61 are you free to head back to the warehouse fire?" "Yeah this is 61 heading back to warehouse fire, 10-4" We head back out to the ambulance and head back to the fire.

We get there and start helping to triage patients. Mainly people have cuts and bruises and smoke inhalation. After being back on scene for 10 or so mins we hear Chief call over the radio,"Thats is everyone out! The smokes turning black!" "Copy that chief!" Casey replied. Soon all the firefighter had retreated out of the warehouse. Suddenly house 63 shouts over the radio that they have a man down inside. Chief say, "Im sorry but nobody is going back in, we arent risking lossing anyone else!" Everyone understood the decision the chief had made and understood why he made it but that didnt help the feeling you get when one of your own is dead inside a building.

3 hours later....
Chases p.o.v:
The fire is out and now 63 can bring out their down firefighter. We stand in 2 lines with the building one end and a ambulance the next. They start to carry a stretcher out and Chief yells,"Attention!", with that we all raise our arm so we are saluting and they walk the firefighter down the centre and place him into the ambulance when the doors shjt chief says,"At ease, fall out!" We lower our arms and fall out.

4 days later... The day of the funeral/service:
We all got dressed up in a blues and lined up outside the firehouse, with the trucks and ambulances behind us. When the black vehicles and fire truck turn down the street we all stand to attention and salute. When they turn roumd the corner, we stand at ease and then fall out we all get changed and head straight for Molly's. Its been one hell of a week and the best thing for us is to be surrounded by friends and family.

I know this chapter is shorter than the other but I left it a bit late to write it and I thought that the last line I wrote was a good place to leave it at, Ill update again soon. Thanks for reading x
