Jonathan squeezed my shoulder to wake me up from my nap as he started to park in the complicated parking lot. I yawned and fiddled with my bangs, wishing I brought a comb. Although my hair was naturally wavy, my layers made it difficult to make it seem nice. Once he fully parked, I grabbed the packet and hopped out, already seeing people walk out with textbooks in their arms. I waited for Jonathan on the sidewalk that leaded to the entrance of the school. We walked next to each other in an awkward silence. A lot of my friends knew about my accident and were cool about Jonathan being my big brother and dad.

I ran into my friend Willa and she pointed me to the first station. We gave each other a quick hug and I rushed up the stairs, knowing we were already late. I tried to calm my breathing down while Jonathan was going over the paper work with one of the student volunteers. Once they finished collecting everything, I had to wait in a different line so they could take my picture. I rubbed the sleep out of my eyes, hopefully not smearing my mascara. I don't wear much make up anyway. The photographer sat me down on a rusty stool and tilting my head this way and that. My face planted a fake smile and the flash in my eyes signaled that my picture was taken. Great. I walked over to the ID slot machine and took my card out. Aw man! My mascara did smear.

"You look great, kid. You really do. At least your hair doesn't look that bad," Jonathan teased. I stomped my foot and punched his arm. He laughs when he doesn't even budge.

"Jerk," I mumbled under my breath, shoving my hands into my pockets. "Let's just go get my books already." I stormed away towards the school's library. Before I knew it, I was swept off my feet and put onto his back.

"Come on, Ula. You know I was just kidding," he said with an apologetic tone. I sighed and wrapped my arms around his neck.

"I know, I know. You're right," I admitted.

He let me down once we get inside and everyone gives us an awkward stare. He grabs my shoulder and walks through the staring crowd. Shivers travel through my body, remembering all the different faces that stared at me while I was in the hospital. We reached the checkout desk and Jonathan carefully shoved my schedule to the librarian. I tugged on his shirt so he could calm down but he didn't take his gaze of her. I swear I saw a faint golden glow come from his eyes but, it was probably just shine from the window above him. She nervously handed me my stack of books and quickly said, "Welcome to Sapphire High, Ula Lopez."

I nodded and uneasily carried the books out the door.
