Elspeth pushes herself against the wall, hoping to blend in with the darkness as her balcony door swings wide open. She crouches, ready to surge past whoever it is and into the night sky, her only means of escape.

"Elspeth?"

The voice is soft, softer than she remembers, but unmistakable even if she doesn't recognize his scent. Slowly, Elspeth rises from the floor, her eyes cast down. How could she look him in the eye? She knew, for weeks that he was back, yet she never sought him out.

"My love," Gregory says softly as he approaches her, taking her into his arms. "Oh my love, how I've missed you." His arms tighten around her, his mouth pressed against her shoulder pressing soft kisses into the skin there.

"You forgot me," Elspeth whispers. "you didn't miss me at all." Gregory stops kissing her shoulder and pulls her even closer to him.

"I'm so sorry. I'm sorry Elspeth. I didn't know, my memories were locked away." Gregory rubs her back, he can feel how rigid and tense her muscles are beneath his hands. "The moment I could remember, you were the first thing on my mind. Please forgive me, my love."

"I don't blame you, not really. just don't lie to me and tell me you've missed me when you didn't even know my name for an entire year. time moves slowly when you're immortal," Elspeth pushes away from him. "but i'm sure you know that." She makes her way to a medium cauldron on her altar and slowly raises her hand over it. the smoke that had settled at the top of the room is slowly drawn into it. Elspeth closes the lid and hooks leather straps to it that secure the lid to the body of the cauldron.

The statement confuses Gregory for a moment and he looks at Elspeth, really looks at her. Her hair is far thicker and longer than he remembers and her skin had paled significantly.

She finally looks him directly in the eyes and he begins to understand. Her once green eyes are a deep red.

"I don't understand," Gregory says as he tries to reach out to her. "The amulet..."

"Didn't work on me. I'm just as confused as you are." Elspeth runs her fingers over a large tome. "But I think i'll have answers soon."

Just a short chapter here I'm sorry I'm so bad at updating but I'm trying really hard to do better! Thanks for reading :)
