The next morning she dressed in jeans, brown riding boots, and a red long sleeved tee shirt. She left her hair down and no make-up. The only jewelry she wore was her wedding rings. She made the bed and turned off all the lights in the house. She stopped for gas and coffee.
She was humming along with the radio as she headed for the highway. Her phone dinged as she made the exit for Atlanta. "U headed this way?"
"Be there in a couple hours. Just exited for Atlanta."
"K. C U soon."
"K."
A couple hours later she took her last exit. A slow smile covered her face as she drove through the tiny town. She felt lighter. Like a weight had been lifted off her.
When she got to the edge of town she rolled her windows down and took a deep breath. The late afternoon sunlight caused the diamond on her left hand to sparkle.
Her breath rushed out when she pulled down the gravel driveway. She caught sight of the house and saw him sitting on the huge porch. As she pulled to stop next to his sister's SUV she saw the screen door open and a gorgeous blonde stepped out.
She saw him laugh at something she said. She opened her door and slid from the Jeep.
She noticed the beer in his hand and the little girl sitting on his knee. When the toddler caught sight of her she heard a squeal and she scrambled down. "Easy." The blonde laughed.
Delilah shut her door and knelt down to scoop the running two-year-old up into her arms. "Lilo!"
"Hi, gorgeous!" She pressed a kiss to the baby's cheek.
"You here. At Gamms'"
"Yea. I am."
"Ole on the porch with mama." She pointed towards the porch.
"I see."
"Come on, Lilly. Let's go see if Gam has some popsicles." The blonde called out.
Lilly squirmed to get down so Delilah set her on her feet and followed her back to the porch.
The blonde smiled as Delilah climbed the steps. "Hey, Lils."
"Hi, Jess."
"Cole's been mean..." She stuck her tongue out at her brother before going inside with her daughter.
Cole rolled his eyes and took a pull from his bottle.
Delilah leaned against the post and eyed her husband. He was kicked back in a chair wearing boots, jeans and a grey tee shirt. His signature Georgia Southern hat was on backwards. He was sexy and he knew it. He looked at her and gave her the heart stopping smile that made girls fall in love with him.
Cole stared at the beautiful brunette in front of him. She was leaned against the porch in her faded jeans and a red shirt. Her hair was down and wasn't wearing any makeup. His heart skipped a beat. The diamond on her hand glittered in the sun. He flashed back to the day he put it there. She had taken his breath away when he saw her come down the aisle in the white lace ball gown on her father's arm. She was looking at him much like she was right then.
He licked his lips and downed the rest of his beer. He sat forward and snagged her pocket. "Why are you way over there?"
She laughed as he pulled her down onto his lap. He leaned his head against hers. "Hi."
"Hi yourself."
"I missed you."
"I missed you too."
He pressed his mouth to hers. She wrapped her arms around his neck. Cole lifted his head. "Take a walk with me."
"K."
She stood up and stepped away from him. He took her hand and led her around to the back of the house.
Cole laced their fingers together as they walked in silence. When they got to the pond she gasped. There was a blanket with a picnic basket under the tree. "Cole..."
"I love you so much and I just wanted to do something nice for you. You do so much for me..." She cut him off by throwing herself into his arm and kissing his mouth.
"I love you too."
They had a quite picnic under the tree when she spoke. "Cole?"
"Hmmm?"
"I've been thinkin."
"About?"
"The specialist...."
"Ok."
"I wanna go see him. Hear what he has to say."
"Then we go." He said without missing a beat. "We'll go see him as soon as I'm home. Make the appointment."
"Are you sure? I mean I don't want to force you into..."
"Baby, look at me." He lifted her chin. "I want babies with you. And if going to see this doctor is going to make it happen then so be it." He pecked her mouth. "Whatever it takes. We're in this together."
