After a bit of time and excruciatingly hard labor, we managed to fill in most of the cracks present within the wall and remove a good bit of the debris that built up over the past 15 years. At some point, Katelyn left to get better supplies and resources, but I'm pretty positive it was just an excuse to get out of doing the work and I'm kind of wishing I'd thought of the genius idea myself.
In the time between finishing up the foundation for the repurposing of the wall and Katelyn riding off to find stronger materials, Emmalyn and Kenmur dragged Aphmau off to do some Irene research. I stayed for a bit, ensuring things were going smoothly and even lending a hand in diving into some of the material. However, after a while, I found myself dozing off. The words on the page blur with each nod of my head and I'm on the cusp of succumbing when Malachi walks up, scaring the hell out of me as he seemingly appears out of nowhere.
"Where could that kid possibly be?" I ask myself aloud as I search the surrounding area for the little ghost boy. The game of hide and seek we were playing was slowly starting to worry me with how long it had gone on, his presence still missing after an hour of seeking. Of course, I knew that it was probable he was in a more translucent form, but normally he would've jumped out and happily announced his presence by now, "Malachi, you win. Please come out now!"
The sudden weight I feel on my back has me jumping with a yelp, the excited cheers of a young boy drowning out the noise. Any distress I felt is relieved as Malachi happily announces his victory, a smile coming to my face as I join in on the cheering. I shift him into my arms, playfully bouncing him as we both cheer, "I won! I won!"
"He won! He won!"
He pulls Aphmau off to the side, the two having a hushed conversation while I'm left 'researching' Irene with Kenmur and Emmalyn. I watch as Aphmau walks into Zoey's place, taking that as a sign that maybe I can just sneak away and do something... a little more entertaining.
I ease away from the small set-up undetected, heading towards the old guard tower. As I walk in, I immediately spot that mystery dude off to the side on his own, doing his usual brooding. Walking in a little further, Laurance is also present and flashbacks to our encounter last chapter have my cheeks warm.
The kiss between me and Laurance had already been talked out and is now but a memory of the past. It wasn't anything relatively special and is now cozily sitting in my kiss ranking list, easily nestled in it's spot in the top 3. It did, however, force me to remember a yearning I had planned to keep tucked away deep in the depths of my brain. The yearning for the presence of a different Shadow Knight, one I haven't been able to hold close in over 15 years.
I quickly greet Laurance in a slight nod, heading to my designated corner in the guard tower. I take the big chest from a few chapters ago out of my inventory and sit with it on my bed, flipping through some of the newly added content. This content mostly included things from before we were trapped in the Irene Dimension and from before I found myself in Phoenix Drop. Old toys and various papers with more meaning than what was inked on them mostly filled the chest, each reminding me of fond memories before my life became unnecesarily complicated.
Within the chest also lays an enchanted amulet, a parting gift given to me by Vylad that was meant to keep us in contact. Unfortunately, in a tussle with Zane for the amulet to Irene's dimension, my amulet was broken and has yet to magically repair itself like it has in the past. It's the main reason I worry over Vylad's current whereabouts. I haven't received any messages from it in years now, no sign of anyone even being present on the other side of the communication line.
I don't doubt Vylad already knew of the portal incident, given he tended to keep close tabs on things happening in Phoenix Drop and his brothers. It would explain why he hadn't used the amulet those 15 years I was in the Irene Dimension, but the idea of something else being at play didn't help in easing my mind in the slightest.
