Later that evening, she lay in bed thinking, not about anything in particular, but even so, her mind kept coming back to her new case. luckily, she was startled out of her reverie by the sound of her cell phone ringing. As she reached across the bed to pick up the phone, she knocked over a cup of water that was on her nightstand.

"Oh crap!." grabbing a t shirt off the back of a chair, she quickly started mopping up the liquid. "Hi Jesse."

"Hey," he said, "what happened?"

"I just spilled some water, no biggie. anyway, i'm glad you called. i got a new case today and it's really bugging me." Jesse was in the same line of work as she was. They often helped each other on difficult cases, and right now, Jen was looking for some input on hers.

"me too," Jen could hear him get up and start pacing around his room. "i got it a month ago. I guess, it's been an open case for a while though. anyway, so far, there has been no ransom call, no threats, no body found, it's just like she disappeared. Except for the fact that the parents and the boyfriend swore she would never run away or kill herself. Even the school counselor was very adamant that she was they happiest kid she'd ever met."

"mines like that too," jen said, "its more recent than yours, but for now they seem to be running on the same tracks."

"i've heard about a couple other people who have had a similar situation to ours. in fact, i myself had one years ago. poor thing was never found. If u want, I can dig it up again for you."

"That would be great, Jesse! Thanks so much. Hey, you wan to tell me why you called anyway?"

"Nothing really. I just was going to ask if u wanted to grab a drink after work tomorrow but I think you have enough on your plate without adding a fuzzy head to the mix."

"You're probably right," she said with a sigh, even though that's exactly what she wanted.

"Ya, sure." He said. "Just thought I'd offer."

"No, no. It was sweet, and it would help take my mind off...things."

"You mean Brandon." She could hear the anger in his voice and quickly tried to calm him down.

"I'm fine Jesse, he just has a business trip, that's all."

"I know, I know," he grumbled. "But he should still be there Thursday for his wife's birthday, for your birthday!"

"I want him here too, Jess, Brandon just has to travel. Listen, I'm meeting Kate tonight, before she has to leave. Promise me you won't do anything to . No calling!"

"Who me?" Jesse said teasingly.

"Bye, Jess," I said with a giggle.

"Bye, Jenn, stay out of trouble. We don't want you to go missing too." she heard the click of the receiver on his end and took the phone away from her ear.

"I'll try," she whispered to no one. Shaking her head, she put the phone back on the nightstand and after turning on the main light, rolled over and went to get a new glass of water. When she came back, her phone was lit up with a new text from Kate.

R we still on for tonight?😏. With a sigh, Jennifer quickly typed back. Wouldn't miss it for the world 😘
