Nia and Calum made a cute couple. Nia had vibrant orange hair that reminded Calum of Hayley Williams - never a bad association - she played drums and had a strong singing voice and all that was topped off with a carefree, bubbly personality. People loved being around her, Calum included. Everyone fed of her endless energy, Luke could see why Calum liked her so much. But, as sweet as she was with Michael, Ashton, and Calum... especially Calum, she was always a little off when she was around Luke.
It was just small things like changing the topic from whatever Luke just brought up, or not laughing at his jokes, or always "accidentally" leaving Luke out of group plans, or just being extra touchy with Calum when he was around. Luke gets that Nia doesn't like him very much, he probably dislikes her 100 times the hatred she has for him.
Everyone thought that Nia and Calum were such a cute couple. Luke didn't think so. He thought Nia was clingy and annoying, she was always glued to Calum's side, gripping on tightly to his arm. Luke thought Nia was judgmental and had bad taste in movies, seriously who doesn't like Anchorman? Luke thought Calum was too good for Nia. Calum was smart and funny and extremely talented. He deserved someone better, not someone who he met 3 months ago at a bar, he needed someone who would be there for him and supports him. Maybe someone like, Luke.
But, then again nobody cared about what Luke thought. Luke wondered what happened to his best friend, the one who was always up for playing FIFA on the weekends and chowing down on pizza, the one that would have no problem just sitting around, doing nothing but listening to Green Day. Luke missed that friend. He even missed the pain that came with hanging out with Calum. The hurting in his heart knowing that his best friend will only ever think of him as a best friend and nothing more.
Luke doesn't remember a time when he wasn't pining over Calum. There were times that Luke thought maybe he was over Calum, but those damned feelings came flying back like a wrecking ball. Luke was oh so desperately in love with Calum and nobody knew but him. He spent years harboring a secret that could ruin him if it were let out. You haven't suffered yet until you see the love of your life with someone else. The way Calum kept his arm securely wrapped around her, the way they pressed their noses together, laughing, thinking there was no one else in the world mattered but each other. Luke craved that.
He was too good for her. Calum was too good for Nia. Calum was a 10 at the least and Nia was a 6 on a good day. Luke knew he shouldn't be thinking like this, but he couldn't help it. Shouldn't he be happy that his best friend was happy? He tried, Luke really did try. The fake smiles and forced laughs were getting easier and easier and Luke wasn't sure if that was a good thing or not.
Luke laid in bed, thinking. Thinking about how different his life could be if he had just told Calum how he felt. His phone buzzes on the nightstand beside him. He rolls onto his side squinting at the message --
Calum: hey baby! you know i love you right? youre probably asleep now but i love you sooo much, you have no idea. it's crazy how much i love you, every little part of you. just being around you makes me the happiest man alive, im so thankful i met you. i couldnt imagine my life without you, i just love you so damn much! sweet dreams babe xX
Luke's heart stops, butterflies in his stomach? More an entire swarm. This was sick. Luke felt sick. The universe must truly hate him to play this cruel joke on him. Giving him a taste but letting him know it wasn't his. With tears rolling down his cheeks he types out a reply.
Luke: hahah hey cal, was that for nia?
Luke falls back into his bed, tears soaking his sheets. He thinks he's run out of tears when his phone vibrates again.
Calum: nope ❤
Calum: it's you luke, it's always been you. i hate myself for not realizing it sooner.
Calum: i never felt anything for nia, i ended it
Calum: she never met anything to me luke idk what the hell was wrong with me.
Calum: im outside your apartment please come outside?
Dropping his phone onto the bed, Luke heads for his front door. Opening it to reveal a tired Calum holding a giant stuffed penguin and a bouquet of roses. Luke can't breathe. The tears start falling again, I guess he a little bit more to spare. Luke falls into Calum's arms murming, "I hate you, I actually fucking hate you." but he's smiling as he does and Calum knows it. Placing a finger under Luke's chin, Calum lifts his head to meet his eyes then crashing his lips to his for a long overdue kiss.
When they finally pull away, holding each other, just standing together until Calum speaks up, "I love you too."
