Chapter One

"How is this late already?" Adelyn sighed as she looked at her clock which read 11:15pm. She quickly tidied up the pile of school work she needed for tomorrow and turned her lamp off before tiredly trudging to her bed. Pulling the covers over her, the girl closed her eyes and almost instantly fell into a deep sleep.

"Adelyn! Adelyn, darling, get up! Get up!" her mum was shaking her quite viciously to wake up, and Adelyn just grumbled and pulled the old sheets over her head. "Adelyn you need to get up! Now!" her mother almost screamed down her ear. Adelyn sighed and sat up, the world spinning around for a minute from moving too quickly. She looked at her mum, a puzzled look painted on her face.

"What is it? What's happening today?" she asked, looking out the window to see the sunlight blazing through it and the village streets almost empty.

"Prince Charlie is getting back today, how could you have forgotten?" her mother shook her head and left the room to make breakfast for the two.

Oh, silly me, I forgot that the stupid royals were more important than us peasants.

Adelyn yawned and looked at the dress neatly laid out at the end of her bed. When did she put that there? She thought to herself before shrugging and standing up to get changed. The dress reached down to her ankles, and it was simple, with a white top and a dark brown skirt. After putting it on, the girl went downstairs to get her food.

"Oh, don't you look beautiful? I bet all the boys are at your knees!" Her mother said to her, handing her a slice of bread with a little bit of rabbit meat.

"I wish," Adelyn laughed, then looked at the food, "Where did you get rabbit from?"

"Henry gave it to me, you know, that man who lives just up the hill."

"Ahh, the man who clearly has a thing for yo-"

"Now now, think about what you're saying there."

Adelyn smiled at her mother and ate the food before leaving, "And you thought I was lazy," she laughed watching her mother standing in the kitchen area. She just smiled and shook her head, following her daughter out of the house and the two began walking up the hill towards the castle. There was a huge crowd of people; everyone in the village had showed up to see this.

"Matilda! Matilda!" a man's voice called. Adelyn's mother turned around, her face turning almost instantly red.

"Adelyn, darling, why don't you go with some of your friends."

Adelyn turned around and saw Henry walking towards the two, "Yeah, I'll give you two some much needed alone time," she smirked and walked off.

Whilst walking through the crowd, Adelyn bumped into a guy she didn't recognise, which, for such a small kingdom, was rare. She said sorry to the boy then walked off and acted like nothing happened.

Then, a carriage, pulled by six black horses came up the hill, which Adelyn could only presume was the prince. She couldn't see it very well, but it looked as though there were black curtains on the windows of the carriage. Strange. It's such a nice day. Why would he not want to look outside? And I heard it was a long journey... were they there the whole way? Adelyn thought to herself, knowing she would not get any answer.

The horses and carriage went up to the castle, and then the King, William, came out to give a speech to his kingdom.

"My only son, Prince Charlie, has just returned from a month-long journey out of the kingdom. He had to deal with numerous attacks and fights, but now, Aclye is the most secure kingdom in all the land. With the forests surrounding the castle and the village, and the mountains surrounding the forests, we are safe. And with the help of Prince Charlie, nobody will dare enter our boarders again. We are a strong kingdom. We are a safe kingdom." and then he left to go back in the castle. Adelyn just looked at the man and shook her head. Why was this necessary? I hate this place...
