...as she made eye contact with him, she realized what needed to be done.
"Drake, you don't need to see this," she said as she gently pulled him away from the officers who were restraining him.
"She's my sister! What happened?" He demanded. His voice was thick with emotion and his body shook as he spoke.
"After Chelsea humiliated me I ran away, embarrassed." Shaina bit her lip as she tried to fight back tears of embarrassment and horror.
"I know, I'm sorry but—", Drake interjected. Truly, he was sorry for what happened. Chelsea was a girl he had dated in the past but was never someone he was serious about and he liked Shaina, a lot. There was something about her that was so captivating he couldn't quite pin down. But now wasn't the time to deal with those feelings. He wanted Shaina to get to the point—what happened to his sister.
"—as I was trying to leave, I heard someone calling for help. When I got here... it was too late," She sobbed, as she cut him off. "She was on the ground... there was a pair of scissors. She-she said someone, a guy, was going to kill her and to tell D, to tell him she didn't do it this time. I tried to keep her awake. I asked her to hang on," Shaina whispered as she began to ugly cry. Large tears ran down her face, smudging her makeup.
Drake pulled Shaina in an embrace to comfort her, his body still shaking slightly. Whether with rage or sorrow, Shaina couldn't tell. Maybe both. "Thank you," he said as tears ran down his face, "for being here with her... for making sure she wasn't alone."
Shaina hiccuped through her sobs. "I promised her that I would tell D. I promised," she said as the tears continued to flow freely, obscuring her vision.
"Sir," an EMT said as he tapped Drake on the shoulder, "are you riding along in the ambulance?"
"Yeah, can my friend come along too? I think she should get checked out. At the very least, her parents can pick her up from the hospital," he said as he stepped out of our comforting embrace and shrugged off his jacket, which he put over my shoulders.
"Sure, kid. Just follow me," the EMT said as he followed his peers who were pushing Angel on the gurney.
Shaina wiped away her tears on the sleeve of Drake's jacket, grateful to have something clean to use, as she followed them, looking at the ground as she walked. She was surprised when Drake tentatively reached back to hold her hand and...
